Fire is under control. They're dampening down the smoldering patches now.
Nearly 9 PM here.

Well Done to the Rural New Zealand Fire Service & the pilots of HeliPro Ltd. for keeping the fire under control

Glad Yer not in Danger Luke, Here in Southern California We have Brush Fires in the summer and Calfire usually deploys air assets, Like helicopters(good in tight spots), super scoopers(a pair of yellow & red leased flying boats from the Canuks), a DC-10 and sometimes a 747, But then We have some big flames that ground firefighters can't always handle and some steep terrain in places. Now some places have been fighting mud flows and some have lost and have been red tagged(condemned) as a result and some are blaming the Forest Service for allowing the Fire to get too close to their houses.

Fire is still raging south of my place. You can see the glow.
The bit near my place is still flaring up at times as well.

All fire appliances and choppers are still flying over with monsoon buckets.

The Canadair flying boat is a great firefighter. I've seen them in action in Liguria diving into the the smoke like Stukas bombers.

That was way to close for safety. I would have been gone, evacuation order or no.

And the DC-10 and the 747 can lay waste to whole stretches of a fire or lay a mile or so of fire retardant, all in one pass.

The DC-10 and 747's are nice planes, but can you do this with 'em?

No, Sadly No, But can It hold as much water as a Martin Mars Amphibian? As this plane is also used in California and comes from Canada and It holds 7,200 gallons of water... Oh and the DC-10 holds 12,000 gallons of Water and the 747 holds twice that of the DC-10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerial_firefighting

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JRM_Mars#Civilian_use

Where as the Super Scoopers can only manage 1,620 gallons of water, About as much as a PBY Catalina Flying Boat when modified properly.

Apparently, this wasn't no accident.

A 14 year old kid is being charged with Arson today.

And the A380 is no refurbished Jetliner either, when the 747 does a drop It's like acts like Its going to land I've read, Of course I think they do keep the landing gear up while their doing this, But still, Thats a lot of water and It doesn't have to be sprayed out all at once.
