I know this was asked years ago on here, but I have a ps3 sat on my shelf doing nothing, its on most of the time to run dvds etc but never really for games only on beer nights! my question is can I use this to run seti? surely with such a powerfull processor and gpu we could put the millions of PS3's to use? I will ofer mine as a test machine if needed! dave |

Here is a link to a thread with some links for you to get started. One thing to make note of if that due to limitations by Sony, or maybe their licensing with IBM, the full power of the PS3 can not be used for general computing. Ther was some news a while back that someone had hacked the PS3 to allow full use of its resources, but I haven't seen that out in the public yet. If its a newer PS3, I believe its was posted that Sony took away the ability to run a 3rd party OS like yellow dog linux. If you have a newer PS3 you won't be able to do anything for seti In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

If you have a newer PS3 you won't be able to do anything for seti I think even the old ones will no longer win it if you have updated the system to the newest level. They did that some point.... late 2008 I think. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |

If you have a newer PS3 you won't be able to do anything for seti Yeah in which case they'd be useless for Seti until someone came up with a Native Sony app that does Seti and the odds on that happening are pretty steep. According to Wikipedia, only the PS3 Slim cannot be updated to Linux. Checking the Sony Playstation Linux page, it also says it's not available for the PS3 Slim ("The Open Platform feature is not available for the CECH-2000 model (or later models) of the PS3â„¢ system."). All other models are unaffected. |

The end is near Although Sony wants PS3 owners to download the software, it said that users won't be forced to do so. That said, if users don't install the firmware, they will lose access to the PlayStation Network and playback of games and Blu-ray movies that require the new software. The console will also stop playing copy-protected content from media servers. so basically its a nice conversation piece if you choose not to update In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. According to this website, The 3.21 firmware upgrades sole purpose for existence is to get rid of Linux on all the PS3 Consoles, Old or New as of April 1st. http://kotaku.com/5504123/ps3-loses-linux-support kotaku.com wrote: Of course, Sony is quick to point out the install is "optional", but then, if you refuse to upgrade, you'll no longer be able to sign into the PlayStation Network or play any PS3 games (or Blu-Rays) that require v3.21 (or higher). So no, for many people, it's not really optional. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

fake? its not April 1st yet Oh It's quite real, Sony is quite serious about this. As Sony is from Japan, They may not understand what April Fools Day is or even know anything about It. Besides the News is all over GOOGLE... http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/28/ps3-firmware-v3-21-update/ us.playstation.com wrote: For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS†feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,†as they will not be able to access that data following the update. fake? its not April 1st yet I work for a Japanese company & last year there was a round of lay offs at the start of our fiscal year. Which starts in April. Some people came to work the next day thinking it was a joke. Sadly it was not.
