That's just not fair! None of our charity shops have anything like that come in.

They won't stock any electrical items either, because they have to get them properly tested, and most don't think it's worth the bother.

Good call!

regards, Gizbar.

To partially understand why UK charity shops do not get electrical/electronic equipment tested, see the "Electrical Safety Testing" booklet

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg354.pdf

The tester would also have to charge £2/hr or more to cover cost of test equipment and calibration.

And according to my neighbour, manageress of British Heart Foundation shop, most electrical items donated are hair products or excess wedding gifts, toasters etc. All of them probably only worth a few pounds new.

Hmmm. Heavy stuff. I knew that the costs involved in testing would probably prohibit stocking the items, but if they're all low value items to begin with, then it make even less financial sense to do so.

We do a lot of work for Cambridge university, and we have a guy there who is basically employed to go round with a PAT tester virtually all day just testing electrical items. By the time he finishes all the sites, it's time to start again...

regards, Gizbar.
