@Luke,
Whenever I have recently run into problems changing nVidia driver versions, I have had 100% success using ccleaner to remove all traces of the old version before attempting to load the desired version. The steps I use are:
1: Download (Save) the desired nVidia drivers.
2: Uninstall the nVidia drivers via the Control Panel.
3: Reboot into "Safe Mode"
4: Run the ccleaner and remove all traces of nVidia drivers
5: Reboot - cancelling out of Windoze automatic "Intalling Drivers"
6: Run the downloaded installer.

Works every time for me. YMMV. Good luck.

F.

You would be well advised to stop BOINC, and disable any auto-run at startup before embarking on this procedure.

Well spotted, Richard.
Stopping Boinc I took as read - but you are correct, it should have been included as Step 1. Auto-run on my Vista set-up requires manual confirmation (UAC) so I just cancel at the dialogue box. But, again, I should have remembered it.

F.

Thanks Fred & Richard...
It's step 5 I'd probably have trouble with. Before I can even cancel the operation it has completed itself. Well, it seemed that quick when it did that yesterday.

- Luke.

That's the reason for running ccleaner. In theory, if you remove all traces of the old driver, that would include the information about what files to use and where to find them - thus preventing automatic re-installation.

That has always bothered me about Windows and I would have thought they would have fixed it by now. The window should pop up and ask you what you want to do with your new hardware instead of auto install.

Hi all, since it's cold, last month -5C - -15C, I use the cool air, through the AC hole/tube, to lead it to 2 hosts with a CUDA or CAL (Collatz Conjecture).

And I've to REseat 1 NEXUSS II/VII on a Q6600, when noticed, the 'alarm', from PROBE 2; 96C!

And 1 PSU, will probably give out, a 400Watt, sooner then later, it's getting very noisy and the fan makes max amount of RPM. Also a little too light for a CPU and 5770 GPU, which PCI-E bus, runs at 112MHz.
A really simple way, to give you GPU a little 'boost'. depends on the MoBo and GPU, if it's worth trying it.

Keep on crunching in 2010

I have to say I was skeptical of Win 7 with all the dislike of Vista but after having it for a month or so I wish I could afford to upgrade all my Machines.

You are flaunting fate, my friend.

Do not try to fix something that already works. Or almost does.

The kitties will not hunt you down..........they have all they can do to keep up with me.
But they will chase you down if you do anything stupid, like 'upgrading' to 7'.

NT4.0 was the most stable thing ever. I ran it since day 1, and dos before that........ And XP grew out of it.

If the users ever realized what has happened, and demanded that XP support continued, I wonder what millions of requests to Billy G. would do????

I agree. NT4.0 was more solid than a rock. Wasn't nearly as flexible though. However, it did make for really long uptimes.

My favorites of Windows have to be...7, NT4.0, 2000, & XP.

Worst would definitely be Millennium Edition.

Lets see I've used so many OSes, Starting in 1980: Atari 8bit(XL too), Atari ST(16 & 32 bit), Amiga(MAC and PC on a card each in the Amiga 3000/4000), MS-DOS 3.30-6.00(In a self built PC back in the 90's), Windows 3.1/3.11, Windows 95, 95b & 98, Windows 2000, XP Pro and XP Pro x64, So I'd say I've used a lot of OSes and computers too.

I must say that having run Vista both 64bit and 32bit I have found that it is very much bombproof a little like NT4.
I tried the beta of WinDoze7 and didn't like some of the ways they had moved things around.
I will hold judgement on that till I choose to upgrade properly.
nVidia drivers are the same as Vista drivers they don't enumerate all GPU's so problems there.

I like windows 7 and much prefer the driver crash to the BSOD. So far seems rock solid all the way to 4.0 on my overclock.

It might also be going to the internet to download a driver from microsoft. You can disable that in System Properties > Hardware tab > Windows Update Driver Setting.
