Hello All.

I have just re-started using my GPU for crunching, yet I receive a computation error whilst crunching on the GPU about 15-30 seconds in. Let me just state now that CPU crunching is going perfectly fine.

Tasks with computation error:
Task 1 w/ Comp Error
Task 2 w/ Comp Error

I have just used Unified Installer 0.2 for Vista 32-bit to update my Opti Apps, as far as I know, I am using the latest video driver.

If this is any use, I do have at least 1 corruption on my C: Drive, however I cannot be damned to fix it since I will be doing a fresh install of W7 at christmas.

Any possible solutions to said problem?

Thank you,
Luke.

Before the "Access violation" both tasks show an "out of memory" error and fall back to HOST CPU processing.

What comes to mind first is reboot (full power cycle).

Test GPU memory, with either of these apps, or both:

edit... the first one I linked to is source code. Unless you know how to do that... nah, let me take it down.

"
After app init: total GPU memory 268435456 free GPU memory 89513984
"
Too low value for free GPU RAM.
Try to disable Aero and reduce screen resolution.
App needs more GPU memory to run.

BTW, does your GPU lack of 19x.x driver support?
Why you still use CUDA 2.2 instead of CUDA 2.3 ?

@Ageless: Memtest doesn't run. I get an error.

@Raistmer: I have more than enough memory. Aero was already off...

I'd have no clue if it lacks 19.xx.x driver support.
How may I install CUDA 2.3?

EDIT: Downloading the latest driver relevant to me... Cuda 2.3 190.38.

@Raistmer: I have more than enough memory.

Obviously just under 90 MB isn't enough ;-)

Task Manager is showing my memory consumption as less than 950MB, I have 3000MB available to my system. Don't know why the task information is showing that, but it is hilariously wrong.

You have a 256MiB (268435456) card. CUDA only can use what's left over of that (85MiB).

Luke, since it has a mobile chip (the T9300) and a mobile GPU (the GeForce 8600M GT), i assume it's a Laptop,
the next drivers for laptops after 186.81 is Beta 195.39, I running that version no problem,
(my laptop's only doing Cuda on Collatz, as it's only got 128Mb, too little for the Seti Cuda app's)

So, I have no hope in hell of running this thing? Coz' I swear I have got CUDA to run before on this system.

Your hope is to free more GPU memory. Did you try already to lower display resolution? Any other graphic stuff you could disable?

Ok, It appears the general consensus here is that I do not have enough video memory.
So I have come to a conclusion.

Realistically, I could run CUDA.
You're right, I can lower the screen resolution. I could disable other process hogs.
But, this notebook is primarily for my job. (I own it as I am self-employed), but changing anything more would affect my work output. It would also bug the hell out of me.
CPU usage is fine since it doesn't bother me or effect my job in anyway. (Unless I happen to be watching a movie or doing processor intensive photo editing)

I'll think I'll wait until my desktop build for CUDA.

Thank you all for clearing up my mess into something understandable.
I have disabled CUDA.

Again, thank you all for the help!

Regards,
Luke.

Or swap out the module --> nvidia mobile line

If you go that route, make sure it can hold the form factor, there are three dimensions of nvidia mobile.

I was successfully running cuda on my 256Mb 8600 GTS, It was running quite well too, with no computation errors or crashes.

I knew that memory was limited, and it was running on Windows XP, with a slightly older version of the Nvidia drivers (190.38 IIRC), with a screen resolution of 1280x1024 (it was an older 17" CRT screen).

I also was only running the cuda 2.2 dlls. I don't honestly know if I could have run the 2.3 dlls at the time.

So:- It is possible, but you seem to have to have a combination of luck and judgement.

I still have the card, but when I upgraded my main machine to a GTX260, that machine got the old 9800GTX+ (512Mib), so it's having a well deserved rest.

I think you'll have a big job making it work on your current laptop, Luke. Not sure the effort will be worth it.

regards, Gizbar.
