Message 930131 - Posted: 1 Sep 2009, 8:33:10 UTC - in response to Message 930125.

Don't you feel tempted to bend down and pat him?

Fuzzy, some of my raccoons do come close enough for me to pet them but I have never tried. It is unwise.

To a baby raccoon, my finger could be a fun plaything and/or a tasty treat!!!

Eric and I have both been through the pre-rabies vaccination series, but raccoons are carriers of other diseases nobody wants. And even if my babies are miraculously disease-free, their tiny teeth look very very sharp to me.

Cute as they are, I have never tried to touch one or let one eat out of my hand. (My mama didn't raise no dummy!)

I understand that, you and others have explained that before, but that pic just makes me go AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwww and that head and coat looks so soft.

They used to hunt them, trap them and make hats out of them, As in Daniel Boone.

Note these are/were actors in a TV show, But the type of hat did exist, Just not at the time of the show. A hat made from a skinned Raccoon, It isn't done anymore I don't think and is just Historical today.

Actually, if I recall correctly, their coat is actually very coarse. It wouldn't be soft like a cats fur. It's thicker and stiffer.

Yes, up close and personal raccoon fur does appear to be much stiffer and coarser than cat hair. The babies are probably a bit softer than their mama.

And I have no desire to wear a raccoon on my head!!!

You don't wear the whole animal, That's discarded, Just the skin and the attached fur is worn once It's been properly prepared and I have no idea how It's done either, Nor do I need or want to know that.

I heard about one lady that wore a mink stole to parties. When people commented on the ratty looking stole, the mink would take insult, pop his head up, and look then straight in the eye...

Regarding the free-range bunny, well I do have an excellent recipe that involves a mustard sauce! I suppose this gives new meaning to our thread title "Critter Cafe"!

Stay away from my babies!!! They are much too cute to eat. Besides, the meat would probably taste like cat food...

I had a very similar thought when I first read this. The bunnie huggers at U Vic would not approve.

And you'd have to start smoking a pipe too. Yuck!

But yes, a trapper is often depicted with a raccoon skin hat on his head with the tail hanging down from the backside of it.

I guess they are not like cats or any felines at all, felines have soft coats, it was just that pic you posted, it really made me want to bend and start to pet it's little head and down its back. Just as our cats love to be petted. Of course they are not like domesticated cats, even some have made a raccoon tame, but then again, it's a wild animal, domestication is not done just in one generation, it's wild nature will shine through from time to time and then I don't think I want one inside my home either.

Well, Little Cat A seems to have left his sibling group.

It is not unusual for babies to start leaving their mama's now. Usually the most timid one is the first to leave because all the siblings keep the timid one from all the good eats. I suppose it is possible that Little Cat A got hit by a car or something, but given the time of year and given how cautious a raccoon he is, I think it most likely that he simply moved on. I expect Tweedle Dee to leave next. Mask and Wednesday may pair off together, but eventually Interloper Mama is not going to want ANY babies around her nursing (or competing with her for cat food and grapes!)

Sad, but natural...

So it's a lot like humans: once your kids are able to take care of themselves, you want them to leave your nest and food to you. :)

I was wrong about which baby would take off next. Wednesday appears to be gone. Tonight Interloper Mama came by with only Mask and Tweedle Dee.
