Updated to Fedora 11 and now I get an error " Couldn't resolve host name" but the rest of the network seems to work (mail, browser etc ..) |

In terminal enter: system-config-firewall or You can go to System --> Administration --> Firewall enter your su password First I would try to disable the firewall then Do Network Communication within BOINC's Advanced menu. If this works then you know this problem is down to the firewall at this point you can add BOINC to the trusted services in the Firewall and re-enable it. If this doesn't resolve then we'll need to delve a little deeper... Shutting off the firewall didn't help. It seems to recover if I let it run over night. It seems every-time I shutdown boinc manager when I restart it has this problem. Reboot (shutdown and restart or init 1 and back to init 5) doesn't help either. but within 24 hours it starts working again. |

OK, this is weird. I have wine on my system and I set up firefox on wine (widoze version) for some reason my boinc is picking up the windoze proxy setup not the linux system's firefox. (this didn't happen until I updated) I noticed (after the third time I looked at it) that it wasn't my normal firefox being opened by boinc when I wanted to come to this site. I sat up a fake proxy so w-ff could only open internal network httpd servers. BUT it worked sometimes??? Thanks for the help |

Reboot (shutdown and restart or init 1 and back to init 5) doesn't help either. but within 24 hours it starts working again. If it is recovering when you leave it then it's most likely the standard network issues (Bandwidth Limitations), this is to be expected and has been and is still being discussed in many threads on the Q&A and Message boards. If you are running out of work down to this issue the best advice has literally been to connect to many grid computing projects. (Choose 5 or so... From the menu: Tools --> Attach to project) RE: OK, this is weird. (this didn't happen until I updated) Hmmmmm. The only thing I can think of off the bat is that Firefox within Wine is setup as a default webrowser and upon launching Firefox within Wine it is applying a temp policy for your linux session policy. To see if this is so Navigate to the Menu, TOOLS --> OPTIONS, then click the ADVANCED icon, Click the tab GENERAL; The 7th tick box applies default browser status. Let me know is this works or you may have already looked at this... This is probibly the first thing I would check but there could be a few other things to try. I have the same problem with Fedora 11 and all current updates. My network is fine (other Windows machines connect just fine) but my Fedora box won't. This started July 24th. I can use Internet, but BOINC can't connect to anything. iptables is turned off, and there's no proxy. MRB Motorsports #37 1937 Chevy Sedan (Legends) www.northstarspeedway.com |

I can use Internet, but BOINC can't connect to anything. You did allow BOINC's binary to use the internet on TCP port 80? |

And now today it works, I could even attach to World Community Grid and uploaded all my tasks. Didn't change anything on the system; haven't even used the box since my last post when I checked it. Nothing on my network changed, either, and three other Windows machines had no problems. No Linux updates applied to that machine since then, so it almost HAD to be a BOINC or temporary Linux issue. Will keep an eye on it, but are there any flags I should set to help logging in the future? MRB Motorsports #37 1937 Chevy Sedan (Legends) www.northstarspeedway.com |
