Definitely cute. And I've smelled their odor from afar(once) and I pity the Dog that got skunked, As the scent is supposed to be long lasting. :D

Babies!!!! I'm a great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother!!!

Last night Interloper Mama brought her three new babies to visit us. We could not get all three in a good shot. The third baby was climbing our cedar tree when Eric took this shot. Richard has already suggested "Mask" as a name for a 2009 raccoon baby, so the biggest and boldest of IM's babies will be Mask. This leaves two babies without names. Any suggestions?

Thing Two has visited us many times and she is definitely nursing a hidden litter, but she has not brought out her babies yet. So Raccoon fanciers, if you do not get to name a baby this round, fear not. I'm sure there will be other babies in 2009 who will need to be named.

Actually SJ, if I have the reference right, that would be "Thing 1" and "Thing 2" from the Dr Seuss book The Cat In The Hat.

Maybe go with another classic book reference. Tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum?

I was thinking more along the lines of Little Cat A, Little Cat B,...

This story will make you happy to Angela.

M... lives on a houseboat in the Delta. Last night his dog had an encounter with four raccoons. (He stated the largest one was about 60 lbs or the size of his dog. I can't believe they can get that big.) A kind hearted landowner,150 arces, has agreed to let them live on his land, provided M... can trap them.
A guarantee has been obtained, that the raccoons with not be harmed.

As to names...If they are male, Rascal or/and Ritchy, for a girl..Loreley and/or Sissy.
Pluto will always be a planet to me.

I have seen a large male that probably weighed 50 to 60 lbs. It was kind of hard to tell as it was acting scared of me (or maybe the noise that the garage door had just made), and had fluffed its fur out, but it was about knee high.

Hi Everybody!

Thank you for the great names.

Mumps is correct, Thing One and Thing Two were inspired by the brilliance of Dr. Seuss, but Super Joker - "Wednesday" is a perfectly good name for a raccoon and so Baby #2 (the one in the corner of the photo) will henceforth be Wednesday.

Mumps, "Tweedle-Dee" is also a perfectly good raccoon name, and so the tiny baby who was climbing our cedar tree will henceforth be Tweedle-dee. I'll try to get a good shot of Tweedle-dee to post some time in the next few weeks so that you can all see how cute he (she?) is.

John and Uli, I will use a name from each of your lists for the next litter of babies I see this summer.

As to names...If they are male, Rascal or/and Ritchy, for a girl..Loreley and/or Sissy.

Uli, the only flaw in this plan is that I am unable to determine whether a raccoon baby is male or female. When they grow up I can figure it out by who has babies following them every summer and who does not, but when the raccoons are babies themselves, I'm pretty clueless. Nevertheless, "Rascal" is gender-neutral and will be an excellent name for a future raccoon baby.

I have seen a large male that probably weighed 50 to 60 lbs.

John, that is really impressive! Cilantro is our largest visitor. He is a male and while he will not suffer me to put him on a scale, I figure he might weigh about 30 pounds.

One of my names made the list, so woohoo.

M gave me update today, the cage saw no action. I am hoping, that the raccoons just wanted to expand their teritory(?) and decided, this area is off limits.

Erratum.

I previously reported that Interloper Mama had three babies. I was wrong.

Tonight we had proof positive that there are, in fact, four babies. Pictured from left to right are Mask, Wednesday, Tweedle-dee and Little Cat A. Uli, if a fifth baby shows up, it will be Rascal for sure. We are still expecting Thing 2 to come by some night with her litter, so keep the names coming.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this "family photo" documenting all four babies and another special little visitor. The blurry object behind IM is an over-turned water dish. Baby raccoons tend to over-turn water dishes. We only have this problem in the summer and fall. It seems that they mature out of that behavior.

Eric said the photo reminded him of the Last Supper, with the skunk playing the part of Jesus Christ.

Addendum.

Eric just told me that he has named the skunk "Odiferous Rex".

Ah Yes, That sounds like It might translate to "smelly tyrant" or something(It's a guess). Sounds like a good name for a skunk. :D

While she is not a raccoon she IS a Maine Coon supposedly from the Norwegian Wood Cats that accompanied the Vikings to North American. She might be tiny but can clear a 5 foot fence from a Squat position and is an absolute Berzerker! Loves to riccochet off of walls, cabinets, and anything else in her way. She has only 2 gears, flat on her back asleep and flat out pedal to the metal.
came to us from a local shelter and is named Bonkers.

Odiferous implies a scent which is rarely unpleasant.
Rex implies a King or a Ruler

perhaps it should be
Malodorous Rex
STINKY RULER!
or else KING OF STINK!

"Odiferous Rex" is also a play on Oedipus Rex.

Richard, I named the boldest baby Mask, after your suggestion in this very thread! Richard, your godson is doing well. He is a strong, healthy and handsome raccoon.

Mask is definitely the boldest of the brood. Little Cat A is the most shy. One might expect Little Cat A to be a small raccoon, perhaps the runt of the litter, but this is not actually the case. Little Cat A is good sized. Raccoon temperament seems generally to be independent of raccoon size.

The range of raccoon temperaments seems wonderfully adaptive to me. In every litter there seems to be one very bold raccoon baby, one very shy raccoon baby and one or two with temperaments in between. This range in temperaments may contribute to the success raccoons have had in populating so many different environments. If there is environmental pressure favoring bold and aggressive behavior, well there is a least one baby perfectly suited to handle that. If there is environmental pressure favoring cautious and hyper-vigilant behavior, well there is at least one baby perfectly suited to handle that. If at least one baby survives from every litter and Mama Raccoons have several litters across a life span, well you've got yourself a pretty darn adaptive species there!

Wednesday is my favorite of this litter. I am guessing she is female from the delicacy of her features, but I have a 50% chance of being dead wrong on this count. She is perfectly suited for the "dangers" of our backyard. She lets Mask check stuff out first, but as soon as something looks safe she's right there exploring with him. She is aggressive enough to be up front for all the good eats, but cautious enough not to become a "good eat" herself. She gets nearly as many treats as Mask, and significantly more than Tweedle-dee and Little Cat A who are both entirely afraid of us. Yet if something in our backyard turns out to be dangerous, Mask gets in trouble first and she has time to run away!

Wednesday reminds me of Runtsie, my all time favorite raccoon baby from several litters ago. Mask reminds me of Bravesy, Runtsie's brother. Wednesday is to Runtsie as Mask is to Bravesy. For a picture of Runtsie, see my profile shot. Bravesy is my avatar.

We are still waiting for Thing 2 to come by with her babies. Thing 2 is an extremely shy raccoon, so perhaps we wait in vain.
