Anybody know what the snazzy new colors represent on people's forum posts? I tried to determine if they were based on the number of posts, total credit, RAC, or member signup date, but nothing seems to hold up.

I don't know, but it seems like one colour being for forum moderators and another for volunteer testers.

It's "special users". Too bad the "Volunteer tester" is a "special users" as well.
You can disable it in your Forum preferences. Just take the check off of "Highlight special users" and save the changes.

Hmm, what qualifies as a special user? I seem to have a dark grey background on most of my posts.

I disabled the special users highlight, so all I see is the normal light grey - dark grey change per post. That you post on a dark grey background depends on what post you made in the thread, odd or even. It would seem that all starting posts are light grey, the first person answering in the thread gets dark grey, the next gets light grey again and so on.

In any case, it's better than always posting the 13th post, which I seem to be doing quite a lot. ;-)

Special users are anyone with a tag under their name. "Volunteer Tester", "Forum Moderator", "Project Administrator", etc.

Sorry. :)

[Edit] You could always join SETI Beta, which has open enrollment, then you'd be a Volunteer Tester. Of course, you'll have to understand that with SETI Beta, things can change dramatically, credit may sometimes not be awarded, and you'll have to watch for important announcements if there's a new app suddenly released that requires you to abort all work due to a change in processing or validating.
