ADDITIONAL INFO :
I don't no if this helps,...so don't shoot the piano player...

This is the update I mentioned : (free translated from Dutch)
>KB885626: Essential update for Windows XP
This essential update helps to avoid problems with soms systems BIOS - Intel Pentium 4 and Intel Celeron D processors related with Prescott C-O stepping locking up when Windows XP Service pack is installed. It is not a security problem.

You will only get this problem if you either do a new install or get down to One Work unit, in my testing it will not make any differance if you are using XP SP1 or SP2 :)

On a new install, as soon as you have one WU downloaded, the bonic client will hang, I have never waited to see if in time it sorts itself or not.

I'm not moaning but I hope the Dev team are aware of this bug :)

This happened to me on my HT machine. It ran out of work for LHC and SETI and with only CPDN running, BOINC was unresponsive. Reinstalling BOINC did not help and may have trashed the work unit. Resetting preferences for one processor and rebooting did fix it and downloaded a new work unit. There is some LHC on there now, but I am scared to reset the processors to 2. I never dreamed two projects would go down at the same time. It was with BOINC 4.9 but I don't have SP2.

did anyone try to change the settings to suspend the workunits instead of terminating them when switching projects? maybe this will solve it.

Also, try updating your motherboard's BIOS.... (since the patch is related to a bios incompatibility, maybe its just a workaround... I donno)

Bravo for them, but it's not an option for SETI. If you try to connect to SETI using the 4.05 BOINC client, you'll get a message from the server to upgrade and no work.

1. I am sure the problem has nothing to do with Win XP SP2 or not as I'm using SP1.

2. I do not think there is a relationship with the Bios. I'm using the latest Bios on my Asus P4P800.

3. This problem never occurred with an earlier version of Boinc, therefore the problem I believe comes from Boinc.

DEV team needs to fix this bug.

by saying its related to SP2 we meant upgrade to SP2 to maybe solve it. The fact you only have SP1 might be the reason... (its a stretch, but a possiblity)

Here's my experience running a new P4 3.0E (Prescott) with SP2 (Patch KB885626 installed) and lastest MB BIOS update:

With HT enabled 4.09 installs but hangs trying to get work.

With HT disabled I reinstalled and was able to get work with no problem. I set my connect time to 3 days and got a bunch of WUs.

With HT re-enabled 4.09 seems to run correctly and has one WU running on each (virtual) CPU. It also grabbed more WUs so now I have a couple dozen waiting!

Don't know if this helps anyone, just another report for the BOINC guys (if they are reading this?)

I have hung once or twice earlier in the week, and am currently trying to figure out why the upload problem is occuring. But my biggest concern is this:

I see threads about needing to donate money to the cause, which I have thought about (like many) but will actually directly do tonight, but I also see threads about "dev needing to fix this bug". Now, I don't know about you, but I thought BOINC was Open Source. We have a bunch of programmer types out there that can walk through the code and figure out what the problem is in about an hour, estimating that hour to be about 100 - 150+ person hours of work...

I can look all I want and not figure it out (I'm a database type), but I am going to give it a shot. I am going to start at Paul Buck's site tonight and start trying to help by giving my eyes along with my money and cycles...

Something to thing about before bitching...

P.S: Paul, thank you very much for your service to our country.

James,

You are welcome. I always liked that part of the Navy ... :)

You can also look at the developer site and get more information there. I have extended many of their explanations as best I could ... but I worked too hard so have been out of it for all of last week ... :(

I hope to get some work done this week and next ...

Though I got my iPod and have still not gotten a real good load of my music, so one more computer thing to have to work with ...

Yes, with open source projects, everyone is a potential developer.

Unfortunately, I work part time in addition to taking 19 college credit hours (so 30 real hours), so I am too busy to donate my time to anyone at the moment.
