At the beginning of the year we had problems communicating with the Seti servers due to one server who probably drank too much on New Years eve.
Since this problem was fixed we had no problems at all, at least not that I am aware of.
During the problems crunchers, including me, complained that their cache was running dry and computers just stood there doing nothing.
Now things are running like clockwork we hear nobody. So I thought let's start a thread expressing the compliments and thanks to everybody who is keeping Seti@Home alive.
You all are doing a terrific job. I'm sure it can't be easy to fill the mouths of more than 1.5 million hungry crunchers all over the world, but you are doing it.

Don't no where you got the 1.5 million figure from... I though the number of active crunchers was somewhere just above 300,000...

Hope this isn't getting off-topic but, not all BOINC users crunch SETI, and in fact, If you have a look at SETI@home project page on BOINCStats you'll see that there are less than 200,000 active participants in the SETI@home project. So my statement wasn't entirely true either....

But, yes, that is still a lot of computing power that needs feeding...

I reckon that working on Seti must be one of those thankless jobs. Most people complain (yes even me from time to time) and very few say thanks.

I'd like to add a big heart felt Thank you to the guys that keep S@H alive. Not just alive but moving forward. Its a miracle what they have managed to achieve given their lack of funding.

... and while we're at it, reflect also on Dr. Anderson and Rom Walton and JM7 and others who built BOINC to tolerate outages -- and think about the number of machines that may have come close to running dry, but didn't.

Because we'd all be able to keep crunching, Matt and the gang can get a full night's sleep and not have to run into the lab at 2:00am.

There are plenty of kudos for both teams.

Well, my cache ran dry completely. For about 3/4 day I did nothing. In pure despair I joined Rosetta@Home and did some work, but as soon as Seti gave me WU's again I finished my Rosetta WU's and fully concentrated on S@H.
I now have my cache a bit larger to be able to keep crunching should there ever be an interruption again.

A lot of the complaints are because people have the wrong expectations of the project.

Take it back to the original idea. The SETI@home guys had an idea of collecting the radio telescope data that was being sucked in by other astronomy projects anyway. Then asking people to run a background task on their idle PCs to analyse this data and report back the results.

We voluntered to join the project to help them out. There was never any promise that the project would have work available 100% of the time. Servers crash, the project is under staffed and under funded, they do the best they can with the resources they have. But the gremlins are allways waiting to strike.

If you want to continue to help out, great. Cache a couple of days work, and sign up to a backup project in case of the BIG CRASH.

But moaning that an overloaded server has gone down on Sunday and wont be fixed untill Monday? Be reasonable!! The guys need the occasional day off. I may not post all the compliments, but I dont complain about the occasional gremlins either, and I continue to donate my CPU time because I like the project and want to help it out.

My cache went dry only one time since boinc startet.
I´m running only seti and beta.
So in 5 and a half year a very good job i think.
