Siren, rearead my post and figure out why you are wrong. Hint "From a single machine" - said by me.

So, if he runs a bazzilion machines, he would obviously get his 24 hours in, you running your single machine will get your 24 hours in, and you will have an equal chance.

UPDATE 10/5/2004 New UOTD

Let’s see only new users of SETI/BONIC are picked.

Which means it's not random or at least that’s what it looks like to me .

Ok, I see the error of my way. I worked late yesterday and didn't have my full 2-3 hours to devote to reading the posts. I must have just skimmed. Sorry.... But, I run 3 projects and LHC is way out doing SETI by about 4 to 1. I cannot spend 24 hours on SETI without getting rid of my other projects. So, I still will miss out on becoming UOTD, not that I am trying to be one.

That's why I say it should just be random, maybe with the stipulation that one has to actually have contributed to the project by crunching WUs. And, not by the number of WUs or credits.

And, I agree with you in that anyone selected can only be UOTD once until everyone else has been selected. Maybe the dev team can add that little tidbit of data to the account of each user so they will know that they have been one whether they saw their name on the front page or not.

I appologize for misunderstanding of your post....

Not that *t makes a great deal of difference, but the random user thing is a good idea, but those that do not have a client registered or do not have any credit on the SETI@Home on BOINC project should be excluded... who cares about credit? the results are what counts!

Just some quick calculations ... 50,041 registered users (according to one of the statistic sites), ~365 days/year => UOTD once every 137 years ... and there's a constant stream of new ones... So in reality, you're lucky if you become UOTD... of course not everyone have a profile, but it's still a huge amount of users registered...

IMHO a pure random thing is fine, I don't see a use in making it more complex, unless someone want the UOTD as a status symbol (and think they have a bigger possibility to get it with another 'randomizer') "hey I've been UOTD on SETI and you havent..." kind of thing.
It's just something to show different people that have been involved in SETI in one way or another

oh, and the validators aren't running either, so some of the 0 people could actually have WU's (I guess if they also have no computers, they perhaps haven't run any boinc yet ... ) ;)
oh, and the front page don't say SETI@Boinc either, but SETI@Home.
(Only "Powered by Boinc", and some boinc in the news list text)

Another point of not making it any more comlpicated, why waste the time and effort when there is so much to do on the science side of the project.

The ultimate result may not come until the year 2157, by which time we will be running BOINC v5112.09. ;-) So, until then, the credits are all we have. I like credits, they show that my PC is progressively working. When I don't get any credits, how do I know my PC is doing anything? The little red and green lights on the front?

There's a difference between Registered user and active user. Of those 50,041 how many are actually active users, actually crunching WUs for SETI? I would bet there's not as many as you may think. I highly doubt that all 50K users are active. And, in reality, I will become UOTD some day as long as the same UOTDs are not selected multiple times. I just may not be around to see it, not that I actually care to be UOTD.

Where did you find that I ever said "SETI@Boinc"? I, sir, am not a dolt. That would almost fall under the heading of Oxymoron. SETI is an acronym of one thing while BOINC is an acronym of another. Two totally different things.

I am not looking to be UOTD. I don't care one way or another. I just want to crunch WUs and be the first to find E.T. I've been crunching for SETI for over 5 years and as far as I know, have never been UOTD.

I think, those 50k users have some credit under BOINC. Milions were transfered from S@H1 on 15th May(?) and from those UOTD is taken, 0 credit.

If you are going to use a post to one person to also send a message to someone else, do it this way so as not to confuse the person you are sending the post to:

@ Whomever, this message is for you.

If you re-read your post to me you should see how I was able to figure the statement was addressed to me.

Of those millions transfered, there are only 50+K who have "converted" to BOINC. So, why should the other millions minus 50+K be considered UOTD on the BOINC side? Why should, for that matter, a user with 0 credit be considered as UOTD if they haven't participated in the science? There is no logical reason for either of the above accept that it's easier for the selection software or whatever is used for the selection of UOTD.

Semantics, as usual.

Really who cares if someone said seti@boinc. It is OBVIOUS that this is refering to the seti at home project bein ran on the boinc platform.

Remember kids, dont stoop to arguing semantics!

@SOV: lol, you're funny, as I said, don't look for stuff to get annoyed on and life will get alot easier... I write on a forum, I'm not sending you an email or something, my messages is for everyone to read... and all I did was use a part of your post (i.e. the reason for my quote), and put up some calculations... I never ever directed that post to you alone, I aimed to post to everyone that would read the thread. This message OTOH is only aimed to you ... note the @ sign... and once again... don't look for stuff to get annoyed on and life will get alot easier...
Edit: (if you must continue this discussion with me alone, mail is a much better way for 2 people discussing things, will spare alot of forum users to read things that doesn't affect them ... frank_n05pam@hotmale.com ... and replace that hotmale with msn's mail service ;))

@everyone else: Sorry for this post that was only aimed at SoV ... but I just obv had so say this ...
