Richard

If my memory is correct (dims with time) the public launch of SETI was May 13th, 1999?

Would that be the date, or one close, for a "memember the launch" party?

'This is the culmination of more than three years of computing,

the largest computation ever done. It's a milestone for the SETI@home project.'

~ David Anderson, director of SETI@home ~

. . . i believe THAT is the Exact Date Martin - here's a Quote from back then:

SETI@home offered its screensaver to the world in May 1999 as the first example of wide-scale distributed computing - linking idle computers through the Internet to tackle large computational problems. The key to its success was a fruitful collaboration between Anderson, a computer scientist who was one of the principal developers of distributed computing, and Werthimer, a physicist with two decades of experience collecting radio data and parsing it in search of unusual signals from space . . . <--- click me

This is a good idea. We do need to do a lot of planning for something this large though. But it could be lots of fun.

<snip original post>

Are we talking "central party/reunion" or virtual reunion...

IMO Berkeley is nice late June-August, but still a bit cold in May...

'Course we could just all gather at Uli's [ducking for cover].

. . . NOTE: spoke earlier w/ Eric K - he's got to speak w/ others @ Berkeley

and he'll Post in a few days w/ 'the beginnin' of some details'

< it's 'obvious' this idea shall take lots of Planning etc . . .

> some ideas that i tossed around were a number of locations where SETIites could meet in THEIR prospective area's around the Globe

and the mention of Video Hookups (Skype Video as an example) could be implemented during the Meet's

that way everyone / anyone wanting to attend could (Virtually & Literally) . . .

after some talk regarding all particulars - i would most definetly help out with a Location

based on the East Coast - somewhere here in North Carolina (Universities etc)

> a suggestion w/ the Video Skype - an Archive Documenting the Entire event is of 'Prime Importance'

- Still Photography and Broadcast Quality Video is also available w/ the Equipment that i own . . . and other's could also (naturally) do their own shooting w/ whatever they possess . . .

. . . lots of 'hashin' out to be done - the point is though - it can be done w/ the co-operation of all . . .

Edit see that time stamp Blurf ;))

The place in question is actually my parents' place. However; it does have a pool and a hot tub.

Am I actually volunteering the place, no not directly. However; if a place cannot be found I'd consider it a possibility that we might be able to hold a small gathering here. Something like 10-15 people would be ok; if this were to happen here.

Might I suggest that, since SETI is Global in concept, that a lot of little parties all over the place would be nice?

A big bash somewhere in SoCal, yes, but lots of little parties everywhere else would be nice for those of us for whom a trip to California is just not practical.

The place I was thinking about is a state park up the road from the Space Buildings. Give me a bit of time to get some research done, cost to get in, parking, space for a large gathering etc pp.

@TimeLord04 we could have an after party at your parents place though. The hottub sounds great once the stress of putting this thing together is done and over with.

Like I said, a small gathering might be ok. 10-15 people might be a doable thing. Do you know where Danville is, Uli?

Yes I do, heck I am practically down the road from you. Now since I got the first ticket, is there a spot to put a sleeping bag down. Partying and driving don't mix.

I'm sure that something can be arranged.

Somewhat as a voice form the wilderness:

Think globally: yes at TL’s place in California, but SETI is global. Lots of little parties, perhaps connected by the internet (would seem apropos, I think,)

A bunch of (my) locals at a Stanley Park BBQ.

Or even better, at the local clothing-optional Wreck Beach!

:O

Kenzie, I am only volunteering for the Berkeley maybe thingy. Other states/ countries.....well they got to to do their own thing. This chick has talents, but to organize a global party..... I don't think I am that good.
