According to BOINCstats, there are 4 of those currently out there and they rank #2 in Host CPU breakdown if sorted by average credit per CPU. "Life is just nature's way of keeping meat fresh." - The Doctor |

well, if you want a new computer, pay attention in the next few days. Price/performance, the Core i7 will be unbeatable. |

Too bad those Intel SSDs are too expensive at the moment. I'll wait 'em. Henri. Manned mission to Mars in 2019 Petition <-- Sign this, please. |

Hi all , back to the i7(Nahalem;8-core), find the RAC a bit low, when I compaire this to my QX9650@3.4GHz, wich crunches MB on 3 cores, with a RAC off 5000, 1 core for E@H 800-1000RAC. (WIN XP64; BOINC x64; MB optimized 64BIT SSSE3x); only EINSTEIN runs a 32BIT application, not an ideal situation . . . I'd expected something like 10K (RAC), as the amount off FLOPS /core, are almost the same, but don't know what this CPU uses for L2 cache, wich has much impact on SETI MB crunching. Compairing those 2, by Floating Point, isn't (maybe) NOT ideal, but does say something about the performance. And if they still gonna use the 'old' F.S.B., or the On_Chip Inter Connect, wich AMD uses for their latest CPU's. But also can't wait, cause I'de like to build a new rig, a fast one, with as many cores as possible for my purse, anyway ;^). OFF TOPIC (Still have my forum pages half in German(HEADER) & English for 'inline text'???. Happens only on my VISTA x86 host, though! Kind off 'strange'. |

but don't know what this CPU uses for L2 cache, wich has has much impact on SETI MB crunching. The L2 cache on the Core i7 is 512KB, and the L2 cache is going to be 'per core'. There will be a shared L3 cache which will be much larger. And if they stil gonna use the 'old' F.S.B., or the Inter Connect, wich AMD uses for their latest CPU's. It has already been stated that Intel will be using their new Quick Path Interconnect, which is not the same as AMD's HyperTransport. Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) was developed by Intel and has nothing to do with AMD's HyperTransport technology. The old FSB will be a thing of the past. |

but don't know what this CPU uses for L2 cache, wich has has much impact on SETI MB crunching. LOL. Just imagine 4 cores with 2 threads then... Dual Monitors... 6GB RAM... all mine! All to be build with only $3000NZ?! You will not believe how little that seems to buy for a top spec computer... - Luke. |

Not sure if it's worth posting this info again, but here goes. Who? does seem to have the inside knowledge on the new releases of the Nehalem CPU's, but I guess he is not allowed to release any definite information yet. For Henri, I would think that the Nehalem would be the way to go, I haven't heard much from AMD lately, so unless they have magically re-designed their CPU line to bash Intel the way they did with the Athlons, they will not produce as much work as the Intels at the moment. I'm sure that the motherboards to support the new CPU's are on the design board at the moment, but again, you won't hear much until Intel is ready to release the new Nehalems. You can get a 8600GT as your GFX card, but it has been said that it is not really up to GPU crunching. There has been a thread to do with this before, with a link to a list of compatible GFX cards, but I couldn't tell you where to find it now. I'm sure someone can remember. I have a 9800GTX+, which was approx £115 which will do what you want, but remember that if you seriously want to crunch, a GTX260 or 280 may be in order. Also I think that it uses one CPU core to look after the GPU crunching. I'm sure that someone can advise further on that too. Don't know much about SSD Flash drives, but their speed will not help with seti. A normal disk would suffice. Any definite reason for wanting one? All I know is that they are very expensive at the moment. Any 80% efficient PSU would be capable of what you want. I have a Corsair, but Antec, Enermax, PC Power & Cooling, OCZ are all well respected brands. As for when, keep your eyes and ears open! When the review sites start getting CPU's and motherboards to review, then that will be the time to start looking seriously. And price? Who knows? (no pun intended). Everybody will start releasing their prices when the review kit becomes available and they start the push to get us to part with our hard earned cash again. Hope this helps, although not much in definite answers, regards, Gizbar. A proud GPU User Server Donor! |

All I know is that they are very expensive at the moment. I want a silent and fast PC. Intel's SSD should shave some seconds off of the Windows booting time. Disk defragmenting and file copying should also be fast as a thought. Just think about the ~200 MB/s read/write speeds and under 0.1 millisecond latencies! :) Henri. http://hintaseuranta.fi/tuote.aspx/187273 Other than the big hoot when windows boots, it won't speed up your Seti crunching much..........save the bucks and get a Nehalem..... "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
