Oh yes, I saw that, and went and bought one for my dog today. 2.75 Kilograms of miscellaneous meat for his dining pleasure. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a suitable optimisation reference manual for that one, but I'll see if I can get some 64 bit ssse3x done late tonight :D

Msattler has done it - for many months now, he has achieved the fastest per-core WU analysis speeds.

Indeed, Mark has got his 'Frozen Penny' to a level of stability that is quite remarkable. You're not doing so bad yourself, though :-)

I have retired my q6600 a couple of days ago because it has been the highest ranked machine with that processor for a couple of weeks now. I'm trying to get my q9450 into the top-x, beating as much q9550 and x9650 machines as I go along. Primary aim is to be the fastest q9450. You are in my way achieving this big time :-)

I have been having some problems with my Northbridge over the last week, but I think I solved those now. Time for a new try ;-)

Top water-cooled Intel Quad-core.

Today I reached spot number 12 in the "Top Hosts" screen here. It might not sit ahead of, you know, the crazy Brambleweeny dude for long. At least for today I have the top-rated quad-core machine on all of SETI.

It is a water-cooled QX9770 platform. The goal I set for this machine was to become the fastest, most reliable wet system on SETI. I believe it will hold the top wet mark for a while. (Aargh, that sentence gave me a deja vu of the infamous 'wet spot' retort on the old Newlywed Game.)

Until March of 2008 I was an AMD Opteron guy. Man, getting back into Intel this year was a steep learning curve.

The other goal for this host was reliability. The motherboard I chose has a memory-access-sweet-spot at a native 1600MHz FSB. Thus, the MB is not breaking a sweat.

The CPU temps loll around at 55C, so the platform is incredibly stable. I intend to use it for some extreme Photoshop work when I retire it from SETI.

(Personal note: My Dad and I collaborated on many technical projects when I was young. This particular computer was the last one I demoed to him before he passed away this year. He shared my fascination and terror re. the concept of pumping water into a bunch of bare electronic components. ;> )

My Q9450 box reached 'Top Hosts' position number 17 today.

I chose the Q9450 for my first modern OC attempt (I developed speedup kits for 8088 PCs and crystals for ATs in the early 80's) since the locked multiplier would present the toughest challenge in the areas of FSB and memory speed management. Before moving to Intel from AMD Opterons I kept hearing about FSB bottlenecks related to memory access. Yep, it is a restriction, but not as bad as some people said.

This processor has been running at 3.8GHz and 1900FSB for 9 months now. The Q9450 turned out to be lots of bang for the buck. Intel has discontinued this particular processor.

Since there are 10 fans in this box, it is a little loud. They all have blue LEDs, so as Ricardo Montelbaum might say, "It is better to look goood than to sound goood." Har har.

I don't have any good glamour shots of that box yet. I'll try working on it tonight. I haven't figured out how to highlight the 2" wide clear packing tape that is bridging air gaps in order to guide all of the internal air flow.

Speaking of air flow, my 57 year old cottage-style Florida beach house had marginal central A/C before this project. The extra 2,000 watts of heat in my office became a tipping point, helping the entire house to reach 82F on warm afternoons. Guess who had to pay for new A/C, ductwork, etc. this summer? Ouch. Sheesh, the things my wife puts up with . . . we knew there was a problem when the cat started sleeping in the sink.

1900 FSB at a high voltage (can't reboot now to get specs)
FSB:DRAM 2:3
2x1024 DDR3-2000 at 6,6,6,16 1T, memory runs very cool.

Early reviews of the MoBo liked the high FSB ability, and it works well with the Q9450.

Big hint for everyone: Tune your memory with a memory benchmark tool! I use the free Everest Home edition. Quite often your best access benchmarks will be counter-intuitive when compared to FSB and memory frequency settings. My Q9450 achieves a moderate read speed around 8,000MB/sec. The water-cooled QX9770 achieves 10,675MB/sec at 1600FSB, and much worse MB/sec at higher FSB speeds. Believe the benchmark, not the frequencies. Also, benchmarks are erratic, so run the benchmark 3 times and write down the highest value.

Curious about the free gains from tuning the advanced memory settings? Learn about it by Googling "Anandtech QX9770 Striker II Extreme review". That one was a good find for me, yielding a few % on SETI at no cost.
