I thought I would start this thread due to my interest in Laser Pointers. Post your thoughts and comments...

I currently own three lasers:

1. My low power Red Laser - Class I (which I use for my kitties)
2. 5mW 'True' Green Laser @ 532nm - Class IIIa (a low power green laser, substantially more powerful than my red laser however)
3. 10mW 'True' Green Laser @ 532nm - Class IIIb (a low medium power green laser, which can damage eyes, a definite no no for the kitties!)

I'm currently deciding whether to order a 50mW 'True' Green Laser @ 532nm - Class IIIb ('high medium' power) coz' government is thinking of banning them.

The website I order all my lasers from is Deal Extreme. They are a good laser website and I recommend them to all.

Here is a overview of the Laser Safety Class Terminology:

Class I - Safe. No possibility of eye damage
Class II - "Laser Radiation Warning" The Human eye blink reflex will prevent eye damage. Output < 1mW
Class IIa - "Laser Radiation Threat" The Human eye blink reflex will prevent eye damage. Unless stared at in excess of 1000 seconds. Output 1mW-2mW
Class IIIa - "Laser Radiation Hazard" Maximum The human blink reflex can handle, possibility of eye damage. Output 2mW-5mW
Class IIIb - "Laser Radiation Hazard" Output = 5mW-500mW. Any direct exposure with the human eye will cause permanent eye damage. Recommended for outside.
Class IV -"Avoid Direct or Scattered Laser Radiation" Any laser above 500mw.

Also heres a pic of the difference between Class IIIb & IIIa:

Why would you want anything above a Class II? I just don't see the sense in it, not to mock a hobby. There's not a use is there?

Search You tube for 50mW Laser, 100mW Laser, 200mW Laser, 500mW Laser. They all contain results. I would personally limit myself to 50mW. 100mW is enough to burn through a match and sticky tape.

'True' Green Lasers are the most standard. With a continuous beam, they can be used to point out stars, 5 mW doesn't really show you the beam far enough to point out a particular star. Also tour groups use them in caves, 20mW would suffice. All of these are class IIIa or IIIb.
And then idiots point them at planes and wreck the fun for everyone...

I agree with you, once it gets beyond 50mW, it's stupid and highly dangerous. And don't get be started on people with blue lasers...

I got a 300mw one in Morocco that can burst balloons at 100 yards. Had great fun with target practice in the local park.

Wow, that's powerful! Does it eat up the batteries quickly?

Here's what a 50mW Green Laser looks like:

Small stuff. I have seen the hardware for a laser with a beam diameter of about 5 feet - to avoid ionizing the air. When it is about to be turned on, sirens are used to clear the building. No, it is not continuous, it is only on for a few nano seconds at a time.

Happens here in Aus as well. Some moron pointed one at a police helicopter in NSW. They found the guy and now the state government in NSW is or has passed law to stop their sale (or ownership or something similar)...

Hi folks.....
I bought some months ago a 5mW green laser-pointer through the SETI gift shop.
It is a very interesting technology: an accurate, strong and straight red or green light (in fact you can choose from a variety of colours, it is up to the wave lenght) which looks great in dark night skies. You can point/focus the light beam from 1.000 m distance (for a 5mW laser, the one of the SETI-shop offer) up to any target in the sky like stars and so on...
Never ever point directly to the face/eyes of any person/animal, because the power burns out and damages seriously the sight. Anyway all the lasers advice of the danger with notices you cannot oversee.
For strong lasers, special glasses are provided: identical as sunglasses, but with a special glass filter.
Have fun with.....
Cheers!

lol, was it a laser? That's a suspicious coincidence O_o...

Apparently in the States high power lasers are banned, is this true?
