From time to time in the past, some of you have asked for a pic or two of the Frozen Penny....well, now that I have a new digital cam, I thought I would post you a few...
My 4.3ghz phase cooled QX9650 Penryn....

WARNING....Not for the squeamish...this is not a pretty rig...LOL.

And a shot of one of my air cooled rigs, my 3.6ghz 7800RAC Q9450 TTBT cooled rig...

I see spiderman has paid You a visit. ;) Nice Mark. OCZ ram, Ok. Me due to excessive heat in My house(86F) I had to shut down My least productive PC PC4. Maybe when the weather cools off in the fall I'll turn It back on. :D I wish My RAC per PC was as good as Your's.

Three brief comments:

1: Rather spectacular!

2: All rather 'dusty'...

3: Do you not want the compressor to be uninsulated to help get rid of the heat? It's at the compressor that the higher temperatures in the circulation loop are generated.

1...Thanks, lots of folks were curious as to how it's done.

2...I'm a bachelor, don't dust much.

3...The compressor shell is only insulated around where the return line enters it and the shell could actually be felt to be cool or cold. The high pressure output line (that loop in front of the condenser fan) is where the hottest compressed gas is. The small surface area of the compressor shell is almost nothing compared to the huge surface area of the condenser...THAT's where almost all of your heat is transferred to the surrounding air. The little bit of heat that the compressor can shed through the hot portion of the shell is negligible.

Not to nitpick, but I think the QX9650 is actually a Yorkfield, not a Penryn. Isn't it?

My 4.3ghz phase cooled QX9650 Penryn....

So the phased shebang has allowed you to bump up the QX9650 from the native 3GHz to 4.3GHz.
It goes without saying, but I'll say it anyway, we're impressed!

I noticed UL1 has a Q6600 in the top40 list running not at 2.4GHz but 4.185GHz.
It goes without saying etc.

Mark, are you disappointed with the limitations of the QX9650? Or are you still pushing the boundaries?

Penryn refers to the 45nm Core architecture family in general.....
Yorkfield is more specific, and refers to the Q/QX9000 derivatives within that family.
So, the QX9650 is a Yorkfield subset of the Penryn class.....

Not really disappointed....wish I could do a little better, but I think the limits I have reached lie more with the mobo and ram than the cpu itself. I think on the right mobo I could do closer to 4.6ghz....

And with the lower power consumption of the 45nm Penryn chips, the phase cooling gains you a lot less over air cooling than it used to on the more power hungry chips. I would not be surprised to see somebody OC a QX9650 close to the 4.1ghz range on a good air cooler....

UL1's Q6600 OC to 4.185 is amazing, if that figure is real. Even if it is a G0 stepping, it's still 65nm technology.

And...LOL...I am ALWAYS pushing the boundaries............

I don't think he is running it at 4.185. Judging from the times needed for some of the wu's he crunched it is more likely running around 3.7 and the frequency is misreported because of using a non-standard multiplier. 8 x 465 would be reported as 9 x 465 = 4185. So I think he must be running it at 3720. Still very nice, though ;-)

Regards,
John.

That would be more in line with what I might expect....but yes, that would still be an excellent 65nm OC!! Must have some very good cooling, and/or just got a really sweet chippy...

Thankyou. This leads to encouraging thoughts ... It's not such a great leap from my 3.4GHz to UL1's 3.72GHz.
Will push on. Or is it off?

And that's right in line with what I said just a few posts earlier...

Is OCing a drug? It's addictive to be sure.
Exercise releases endorphins ...

My sprinting Q6600 didn't like galloping at 3.6GHz for long, so we'll canter along at 3.51GHz for now.

I feel good, do do do do do do ... LOL

Thank you for sharing Mark, an impressive rig for sure!
(I do very much understand the dusting part - same boat here)
Like Joker, I am about at the end of the rope for cooling, I may have to turn off a few rigs
to ease off the utility bill, but in the interim I added a 14000 temp BTU cooler to the office:

BTW Mark, which mobo were you using to get those clock rates ? I am looking at a pile of
goodies I got from frys today including a Q9450 for $249.00 usd So, I need a good mobo
and am willing to try an ASUS P5 something..... This will replace an old dual MAC G5 that really
doesn't make sense to run since the RAC rots.

The Frozen Penny, my 3.6ghz Q9450, and my daily driver are all running on the Asus P5K Deluxe....which takes DDR2 ram. Update it to the latest 0812 bios as soon as you have it running.
If you want to run DDR3, there is a version for that also, but I have not gone to DDR3 yet, so I would have to find the number for you.

Good to know, I nearly break my laptop every time I quarantine it for kitty hair. It gets into the keys and fans, horrible job to clean. But that time is always made up for by affection from my two.
