This evening, Lori and I watched 'Star Trek....The Motion Picture'........from a somewhat new widescreen DVD with 5.1 sound.........

I had forgotten how good that flick was........had not seen it in 20 years or so......
The special effects and the basic concept of it were soooooooo good, I probably enjoyed it even more than when I saw it in the theatre 30+ years ago........was it really that long ago????
Vger.....sometimes the Star Trek story lines got a little stretched, but this was a classic........we sent it out there, and it returned.......
Trying to fullfil it's instructions..........collect as much data as possible and return it to it's 'creator'.....be careful what you wish for........

It is worth Mark.
I watched Mad Max 2 on HD DVD and its amazing how an old movie can look like.

Since HD DVD is dead we have to wait til the Star Trek and Star Wars movies comes out on Blue Ray Disc.

Every time we reach the June 6th timeline mark, I remember "The longest day", or D-Day (Operation Overlord): the biggest concentration of military means (troops, vessels, aircrafts and paratroops) in the annals of human History. All this brought alive with the best and greatest stars and starlets of Hollywood and the film industry worldwide that moment. A masterpiece.

I can actually think of a few, some older than others.

The longest day, The battle of Britain, Zulu, Forbidden Planet, 12 O'clock High, Run Silent/ Run Deep, From Here to Eternity.

Now, the reason I suggest Zulu is simple, the fact that one company of the 26th Foot held off the entire Zulu army is worth the story.

12 O'clock High, because it is a war movie with very little combat footage, most of it deals with the stress for the guys back on the ground.

Of all the movies made dealing with the battle of the bulge, Battleground with Van Johnson is probably the best.

Then of course, who can forget Patton.

Then, you could watch Das Boot, and The Enemy Below for the submarine experience. I don't care how many times you may have watched Das Boot, but you still get caught up in the efforts to save the boat, and in the end when she is sunk, it is as if her death brought about her captain's death as well.

Finally, Away all Boats, and Merrill's Marauders.

Personally, having seen combat, I feel that a good war movie deals more with the strain the men are under than the combat itself. How many times can you see a guy get killed in more graphic detail as the years go by, and yet nobody has had the balls to show John Everytrooper hunkering in a trench or foxhole sweating his butt off and peeing his pants, worried about being scared, letting his buddies down, living up to his own expectations, etc.

The Quiet Man . . .

note: Steven Spielberg included part of this film in the celebrated E.T. sequence, where Henry Thomas kisses Erika Eleniak while the frogs escape . . .

~ The teacher in this scene was originally going to be played by Harrison Ford ~

Blade Runner

Which one, the original with the narrative, the director's cut, or the final cut?

Then, you would have to add 2001 A space odyssey, the Original War of the Worlds, On the Beach (the original), THX1138, Zardoz, A clockwork Orange, The Handmade's Tale, and lets not forget Darkstar.

When I saw this thread and started to list the movies, it got long.
Das Boot in german
The one that got away
One bridge to far
The hunt for Red October
Leathal weapon 1
The blue Angel
The Blues Brothers
The Piano
Gallipoli
StarTrek the movie
Blazing Saddles

A few movies I couldn't find the titles for. Airlift for Berlin, not for the acting, but the destruction it shows
The movie with little john, about the escape from east Berlin in 1962
And a danish movie, what a woman can do, when you cheat on one to many times...
I will stop here.
