Ok, I am a little confused about the new optimization app released 1st May.

There seems to be several downloads for different o/s but I can't see one for Vista 32 which I run. Is there one compatable and I'm being blind?

How do I download it. . .

Sorry, I'm not very computer literate!

Hi jim,
The one to pick for your CPU is:
"2 - Windows 32 bit AK v8.0 SSSE3x (Intel Only) "
[Edit: Upped the SSE level, after John Galt's suggestion, though the first one (#1) I suggested would run fine too ]

....from the link in the New Optimised App sticky thread at the top of the forum.

Clicking the [mirror 1] link to download (Yes I double checked your CPU has SSE3 capability ;D) and save it somewhere to your machine, perhaps desktop for now.

The detailed installation instructions are actually inside the zip file downloaded via that link.

Sing out if you need more help with that part, and If I'm not here I'm sure someone will jump in to help too.

Try this one. It is the SSSE3 build that should run on your T2310 processor. IIRC, all of the builds are Vista compatible.

Remember to exit the BOINC client before installing the app. (I always suspend computation also before exiting, just in case...)

Hi Jim!

All versions of AK V8.0 windows 32 are compatible with Vista 32.

To select the appropiate version you must to run 'cpu-z' program (you can find it free in internet). This program tell you what instruccions can accept your cpu (SSE3, SSSE3, etc...) and then go here and download the optimised aplication.

Don't forget to stop BOINC before install.

Best regards.
Logan.

Thanks, I stand corrected, T2310 supposedly supports SSSE3

Well, I followed all the instructions, -suspended, -shut Boinc manager down, -installed the files to the boinc-projects-berkley edu file and restarted boinc. . . First few mins it sped up, but since it's been going at a snails pace.

I've uninstalled the files, but is there another way to speed up boinc?

Sorry, im new to this!
Cheers for the help

Is this a laptop?
I see you have reported a compute error back on the 2nd, with the stock app.....
I am guessing thermal throttling is taking place....would explain why you started quickly with the new app, but then ramped back down when things warmed up....
The new apps DO stress the cpu a bit more than stock or the older opti apps.....after all, they are doing much more work in the same time.

Many laptops do not have very good cooling to start with, and if you have any dust accumulations or a failed cooling fan, it's gonna be a problem...

Hi, yeah it's a laptop, so I guess the heating issue could be the problem, guess I jus' didn't think of that aspect.

Just wondering, is there another way of speeding Boinc up apart from overclocking my puter or installing the new download (I'm just being impatient and want to play with the bigboys!)

Cheers again

Have you tried a cooling mat for the laptop? Thin devices with additional fans to increase the cooling under the laptop, thus help keep temps down. Some are powered from a wall transformer, while others use a USB connection as the fans dont really draw a lot of current.

You probably could keep the (running) laptop in the 'fridge.

Yeah, But unless one has a walk in fridge and arctic gear, It might not be too practical.

Hi guy's, followed saw your conversation and i do think he be better off trying the SSE3 i.s.o SSSE3 .
Also on a Q6600 and a QX9650, it gave, until now, the most speed gain. That also depends off the kind off WU's, VLAR's or MidRange or VHAR's.
I do want to try the SSSE3 & SSE4.1 on the QX9650, though.

Hi, Laptop's, not really fit for continious use. But, apart from OC'ing, you can use an optimized app. SSE3 f.i.
I would say DON'T OC it, try to provide an airflow under the laptop. Fan('s) are mostly placed at the underside.Sometimes it too help's to remove the accu, as it isn,t used anyway, except for (re)charging. (also produces heat)

I'm just curios. What would happen if you did not suspend computation before installing an optimized app?

As long as Boinc is off and no seti apps are running? Nothing, The WU's would still be there after the restart, I don't suspend them and I never will. It's like asking Me what would happen when I go from a paper air filter to an aftermarket filter in My car, Nothing of any consequence. :D

Depends... Are you going to exit BOINC before installing ?

Just by chance... Are you one of those guys who will change out an electrical switch without first flipping off the circuit breaker?

lol. I was just curios. I've always exited BOINC before installing my optimized apps.
