I'm not English but I have been a supporter and member of Team England (BOINC) and join in to celebrate St. Georges Day.

Here is some information about St. George.

Saint George is the patron saint of England. He's popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry - but actually he wasn't English at all. Very little, if anything, is known about the real Saint George. Pope Gelasius said that George is one of the saints "whose names are rightly reverenced among us, but whose actions are known only to God."

Facts in brief

Everything about Saint George is dubious, so the some of the information below may be taken as mythical rather than real.

  • Born in Turkey (in Cappadocia)
  • Lived in 3rd century AD
  • His parents were Christian
  • Later lived in Palestine
  • Became a Roman soldier
  • Protested against Rome's persecution of Christians
  • Imprisoned and tortured, but stayed true to his faith
  • Beheaded at Lydda in Palestine
  • 23rd April was named as Saint George's day in 1222

Patron saint

He is patron saint not only of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark). He's also patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. In recent years he has been adopted as patron saint of Scouts.

It's a sad reflection on the English and our identity being eroded when there are English born & bred folk like me that had no idea today was St. Georges day! Other countries take pride in their patrons days and make them national holidays.

There is a little performed choral work by Edward Elgar, one of the most English of composers, called 'The Banner of St George'.

It was composed to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897 at the height of the British Empire.

Words by Shapcott Wensley:

It comes from misty ages,
The banner of England's might
The blood red cross of the brave St George
That burns on a field of white!
It speaks of the deathless heroes,
On fames bright page inscrolled
And bids great England ne'er forget
The glorious deeds of old!

O'er many a cloud of battle
The banner has floated wide
It shone like a star o'er the valiant hearts
That dashed the Armada's pride!
For ever amid the thunders
The sailor could do or die
While tongues of flame leaped forth below
And the flag of St George was high

* sigh * This just about sums up the respect left for English traditions.

Thieves steal flag of St George

Thieves have stolen the Cross of St George from a meteorological station in Cornwall, police said.

The English flag was being flown from the station in Egue Gaberaic Way, Bude, to celebrate St George's Day.

It was stolen sometime between 0900 and 1000 BST - within an hour of it being hoisted.

Police said the suspect was wearing a red waterproof jacket with blue collar and cuffs and have appealed for witnesses to contact them.

It's their loss, stupid petty gits!

I'm sure there's plenty of good people who carry on the fine tradition. You know what crowd you want to hang out with, right? :]]

The trouble is, if we celebrate anything British/English we get accused of being xenophibic or worse. THat is a lot of the problem.

2 Years ago, Bristol & Birmingham went without Christmas - it was felt by the Councils that imposing Christmas on non-christians might insult the minorities. We had "Winterval" (Winter Festival) instead...Madness!
