So it's "Burglar Beets", at your service. :]]

I hope you stole a glance at his dvd collection. ;)

Hey Misfit!!!

Not only that, but I now have a safe (well storage locker) for my movies too. Just email me with your choice. :]]

I added "Khartoum" (1946) to my collection, a Charlton Heston jihad film way ahead of its time.

I think we like opposite genres. I've added my latest to my collection, finally.

Congratulations, Misfit!!!
You're right! Our taste in women is definitely closer than our taste in movies. :]]

I just finished watching my movie. I'll probably watch it again tomorrow. :)
Next will be a musical. Meow.

Don't go "singing in the rain"! LOL

(I hate musicals)

Oh I intend to stay dry. Lots of fur. It's for the other half anyway.

Is she going to make you watch it with her?

I suppose she will try. I have it right here.

Hello Dear Friends!!!

Hi Misfit! Goodnight Champ! Hi Richard! Hi Kaseychief! Hi Albert.

Man! Did I ever have a frustrating day today. For one thing, my vTech handheld phone stopped working, so I couldn't Skype. Is it ever frustrating seeing someone's cam in action, but you can't hear a thing and they can't hear you. :[[

I tried everything I could think of: reinstalling vTech, reinstalling Skype, restoring my computer back to an earlier date. I found the manual for my vTech...in French, that is. Have you ever tried to go through a manual in fine print in a foreign language? LOL

It all took hours, and nothing! Nothing, Nothing, Nothing! I got fed up and went out of the house to do some night shopping.

When I got back, I had a wacky idea: maybe the default settings are built into the phone. So I removed one battery to kill the power and waited a minute. When I put the battery back in, everything was working fine. It was like the vTech was telling me, "Yeah? So what's the fuss? What's your problem?"

Why is it that it's always the last thing you try that proves to be the thing that works? Go figure.

How have you guys been?

All has been well here Beets. It sounds as though you had as frustrating a time as I had with BOINC the other night. BOINC completely stopped working all together on my vista machine last night and I had to do a complete system restore to fix it :( I sure wish there could always be an easy way to fix things. All well, I guess that is how you learn though.

That's good to hear, Albert. :]]

Yep, I've learned a lot over the years from trial and error...a lot of error, I've got to admit. LOL

Let's see how I learn:
95% trial and error
1% I already knew what I was working on
4% dumb luck
The dumb luck category is probably actually about 5 times that size :)

Another thing I just love is the all so knowledgeable Windows Vista. I get a new HP photo printer and install the driver software I need. I test the printer and all works great and Albert is a happy camper. I come back an hour later to print out a paper and windows vista, being the wise little operating system it is, decides that the drivers for the printer are bad and reinstalls them. After Windows reinstalls the drivers the printer doesn't work at all and Albert is no longer a happy camper and is ready to destroy the printer and the computer. You go back and spend 2 1/2 hours fixing the problem and making vista understand that the drivers are fine, and by that time you don't even remember what you wanted to print out in the first place, and Albert is an exhausted camper!

It's about all that you can expect from Windows though. I need to stop being lazy and get a new disk drive for my Compaq so I can have a linux box again. Perhaps this weekend.....

I think you'd be a lot happier without Vista, from the sounds of it. :]]

My Windows is locked in at SP2 original. I use my Kaspersky firewall and Process Explorer (from Microsoft) to prevent any update whatsoever on it. That's the only thing that makes my Windows XP bearable. ;]

Vista isn't really all that bad once you take the time to tamper with it. The problem is that I do not know all of the tricks to speed up vista like I do XP. I have found that most of them work with Vista too, but a few others only works with XP. All well, I will learn more in time. Windows XP is great after you modify it a bit. The first thing I did with my XP comp is change the start menu text and color, the task bar color, the title bar on all of the windows programs, th hover over text on the start menu, translated all of the error messages into everyday English, and modified the registry to speed it up. It mad my experience much better, until I screwed up changing the start menu text and corrupted the explorer.exe file and had to go back and fix it :)

I have an nVidia card in my machine, and one cool thing that nVidia has is an app that lets you make your window transparent just by left-clicking on it, as if you were about to drag-and-drop it somewhere. I love transparency because I usually have several windows open at the same time. NVidia also has an option to let you easily switch from one desktop to another, so you can have two wallpapers, two sets of icons, and so forth. I don't use that as much as I should, it's a handy feature.

The reason I'm so Retro on my XP is that the more updates and security fixes you allow, the more Windows puts restrictions and DRM on you. It especially makes older programs and games inoperable. Who the heck needs that!

hmmmm.... The transparency thing sounds pretty cool, as does the multiple desk tops. Th only way I can make a window transparent is through the registry, which isn't very easy to do when you only want it transparent for a moment, and the closest I have to two desk tops is the KVM that links my Vista machine to my XP machine.

Albert, it's been good chatting with you about our 'puters.

I have to call it a night now. I want to have a midnight snack, catch a movie on TV and just get up from this computer chair where I've been stuck so long fixing that vTech.

You have a great evening and I hope we'll see you here tomorrow.

Goodnight Albert. :]]
