So Beets, how did you make out on the Kentucky Derby?

Hey Misfit!!! :]]
I was so screwed up I didn't even feel like betting. Who won? Was it an exciting Derby?

Yes it was an exciting finish with the lead horses changing around the final turn and down the stretch. #20 Big Brown won.

Actually, it doesn't surprise me that he won. He won the Florida Derby (a major test) by 5 lengths. Betting friends were saying there were a lot of "throwaway horses". Big Brown's only question mark was whether his #20 post was going to hurt him, and it looks like it didn't.

It looked like he won by the same lengths again. Unfortunately the Eight Belles had to be put down. ESPN story

Aww Man! That's just a horrible disaster!!! :[[[

Great horses race even beyond their endurance, and tragedy strikes. Remember Barbaro? That wonderful horse won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, then broke his leg in the Preakness trying to capture the Triple Crown. In spite of millions being spent on him, he finally had to be put down in January of 2007.

It's just heartbreaking when this happens to such a fine animal! I feel for the horse, his trainer, jockey and owners. :[[

It's always a tragedy when something like this happens. But I believe there are many tracks switching their surfaces over to Polytrack to help prevent injuries. Del Mar uses it.

The Polytrack all-weather track is a patented synthetic surface for racetracks. Polytrack has a high shock absorption rate, and a low elasticity repulsion rate. According to The Guardian, trainers, owners, jockeys and racecourse managers agree that it is the best of its kind. It was invented by Englishman Martin Collins of Martin Collins Enterprises Ltd.

Polytrack has the texture of natural dirt but is lighter in color. It is a mixture of sand, synthetic fibers and recycled rubber coated with a “microcrystalline wax” and mixed on-site, according to the manufacturer.

Polytrack makes up the top six inches of the racing surface, and requires an extensive drainage system before it is applied. The existing dirt surface is removed first, and a system of pipes is installed. Crushed rock comes next, then a layer of porous macadam, followed by the synthetic.

A dirt track must be graded by a tractor-drawn harrow – an agricultural device with discs for breaking up and leveling ground – followed by a water truck after morning workouts and before every race. Polytrack, however, is less demanding, and needs to be "evened out" only two or three times a day. Tracks utilizing Polytrack are always considered to be "fast" regardless of weather conditions.

Misfit I need to correct you on the grading tool pulled by tractors on the tracks. It is not a disk, it is a flat framework with tines that protrude 2-3 inches and sometimes is followed by a section of chainlink fencing to smooth out the surface. (I worked on the tracks from 1972 until 1982)

C-Batallion has come through the hurlyburly well, thanks to Sir Surgesupressor. Our Multimedia sustained great injuries, several long columns of troops were devastated. :[[

We are now mainly involved in a rescue mission to repair several survivors to full health.

Seriously Dan, we've taken a big power blackout in my fair burgh. I have my power back on but 11,000 homes here are still without power. There are things you learn from being in a blackout, I'll post on that here later.

I'll drop in on Rocky's to bid my respects then I'll keep working to "clean up the battlefield" as it were.

I hereby dub you "Sir Daniel". Arise, noble Knight!!!
