Ladies and gentle being...

Lend me your ears, ah the heck with that, I got enough ears already!

WHat I don't have is a lock on creativity, so, I am going to ask the mavens to take a look at a new page I have started (someone complained and they were right that we don't explain the process very well)... so I have one

Here.

I need a good examination, you can reply to the thread, or send me an e-mail.

Once I get the "normal" flow down and we all agree that this is the basic process (and I am not done with the normal process yet) I will start to do the exceptions ...

Nope, it is one I have missed. This is one of the problems with the current state of the BOINC project. The system level documentation is written for an audience that already understands the system.

Nothing new for me to discover. :)

Every thing helps. One of the reasons I started this particular project is that There was a question about definitions of some of the parts as a result of the creation of the status page. So, while curing that I was trying to make sense of the interchange actions between the various parts.

That is when I ran into the problem of the various daemon processes. So, I thought that the EXPLICIT detailing of the process with circles and arrows and internal state transitions documented, well, now we all can understand the activities.

Thanks for the tip...

Paul, you really do excellent work! The Boinc and Boinc Seti projects now have one of the nicest on-line documentation packages I have seen. Thank you.

Well, that page is not complete yet ... but I was hoping for some look see ...

And I am working on the other 4 active projects and trying to get them in too. Examples if nothing else. ...

The Owner's Manual for the Web sites is about 60% done with examples from cp.net, SETI@Home, Predictor@Home, LHC@Home, and a few from Pirates/Einstein@Home though they don't seem to be out of low gear yet ...

Though the rapid changes in the web sites and the BOINC application seems to have caught me by surprise... I mean for the longest time there were no changes to speak of ... now? Wow!

Excellent, as usual Paul
I have a much better understanding of the programs used and the way that the whole process sequences thru these programs.

Well, thanks folks...

Still a lot more to write, we have only gotten the results to the validation phase. And assumiing I have it all correct, I will try to tack on a couple more steps today. But I have to work on some other pages to try to keep the ship sinking on an even keel.

keep your fingers crossed ...

Thanks folks,

The bad news?

I have only STARTED ... I have not even finished the easy one where everything works ...

See what happens when I get feedback I MISSED something ... you should also note the new entries for the glossary for the names of the services/daemons/back-end programs/processes ...

But I need to spend some time today working on the Web Site Owner's Manual to try and get that fully up to date...

I also need to fix links (still had 280 bad ones last test) ...

Make pages W3C complient (had ~50 fail last test) ...

Work, work, work ... that is all I ever do, is work ... :)

I don't understand what the picture is trying to convey.

The game High/Low is played by tossing two nuclear warheads into the air. The one whose bomb explodes higher wins. This game is usually played by people of low intelligence, hence the name High/Low.

Papa,

> I don't understand what the picture is trying to convey.

That is because it is work in progress ...

The top figure is my "stock" in-work picture.

Once I have the flows documented and am pretty sure I have them right I will be laying arrows on copies of this example/diagram.

Then, you will have text, a picture of the flows (with numbers/letters) and the state tables showing the changes in state.

I only spent about 6 hours on it yesterday so we are not that far along. But I have been trying to understand this process for a long time and this seems to be the only way to make it come alive ...

So, like the rest of my documentation it is going to be a changing and growing "live" explanation. :)

Sometimes it is hard to see... but on a good day I will usually create one new page, correct issues on another 10-20, and add content to 2-3 more. Right now I am trying to get the Web Site Owners Manual up for the 4 live projects, and one semi-live project so you can look at the pages and change the project and have examples and text that is tailored to that specific project.

Project unique pages, like the new "Status" page also have to be created and then linked into the rest of the system. Since there are so many interconnects it is what causes me to kind of chase my tail a little ... it is also why the pages evolve rather than spring full strength into being ...

So, I hope to do a couple hours on that page each day, and try to catch up on the other places that need work ...
