There is a (was) popular "protest" song by Neil Young but for the life of me I can't think of its name... anyone?

Are you thinking of '4 Dead In Ohio" by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young? I believe Young actually wrote the song.

It was actually mentioned earlier in this thread, but YouTube seems to have gone away at the moment.

No, it is Southern Man that I was thinking of. I realize that I was mistaken in calling it a "protest song", I think it falls more under "commentary" (and not even about war). I was going to delete my otiosed post but you quoted me before I figured it out. My apologies.

No apologies necessary. And all protest songs are not necessarily about war. Civil injustices of many sorts have been the basis of protest songs. The war genre is just the most prevelent or most thought of.

And Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama was a good hearted "response" the Young's Southern Man, showing the good things about the south.

How many people who wrote, sang, or produced, these "protest" songs, mainly from the 60's/70/s, actually believed what they were doing? I reckon 0.001%.

It was mostly cashing in on the hype, and earning a buck.

Go on then, prove me wrong.....

I suspect most youngsters 'believe' in what they are doing even if you or I think them wrong.

Dylan is a clear picture. Most of his early music was radical and a bit anarchistic or atheistic.

A few years ago he must have realised he was getting older because he changed his style to a definate christian ethic.

People get older and as they get older they become more conservative (small 'c')..

It's natural.

The pouges' version of Waltzing Matilda is very beautiful and poignant.

I agree, I prefer their version to Eric Bogle's original.

Did someone say Protest Song?

Corrosion Of Conformity - Vote With A Bulllet

Cool tune......not much into current rage rock, but it makes a statement. The protest songs of yore were much more laid back. Maybe that's why we're where we are now.........

To get people attention these days you have to hit them in the head with an ICBM. Some of the heavier protest songs might not be everyone's cup of tea, but the emotions they convey are pure and not watered down.

Sometimes it's not enough to Testify, The outrage they feels warrant dropping a Bombtrack

The First Protest song I learned...

Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream
words and music by Ed McCurdy

Last night I had the strangest dream
I'd ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war

I dreamed I saw a mighty room
Filled with women and men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again

And when the paper was all signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful pray'rs were prayed

And the people in the streets below
Were dancing 'round and 'round
While swords and guns and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground

Last night I had the strangest dream
I'd never dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war.

The First Protest song I learned...

... after "We shall overcome", was "Joe Hill"

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,
alive as you and me.
Says I "But Joe, you're ten years dead"
"I never died" said he,
"I never died" said he.

"The Copper Bosses killed you Joe,
they shot you Joe" says I.
"Takes more than guns to kill a man"
Says Joe "I didn't die"
Says Joe "I didn't die"

And standing there as big as life
and smiling with his eyes.
Says Joe "What they can never kill
went on to organize,
went on to organize"

From San Diego up to Maine,
in every mine and mill,
Where workers fight and organize,
it's there you find Joe Hill,
it's there you find Joe Hill!

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night,
alive as you and me.
Says I "But Joe, you're ten years dead"
"I never died" said he,
"I never died" said he.

Johnny Cash made genius protest songs!

Hurt

I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
the only thing that's real
the needle tears a hole
the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
but I remember everything
what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
upon my liar's chair
full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
beneath the stains of time
the feelings disappear
you are someone else
I am still right here

what have I become?
my sweetest friend
everyone I know
goes away in the end
and you could have it all
my empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

if I could start again
a million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

John Fogerty (of CCR fame) with Fortunate Son

An oldie by Pete Seeger; I like the Kingston Trio version from 1966 Where have all the Flowers gone?

One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)
by Lambert-Potter, sung by Coven

Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago,
'Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley-folk below.

On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath the stone,
And the valley-people swore
They'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill,
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they'd kill.

Came an answer from the kingdom,
"With our brothers we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger,
"Mount your horses! Draw your sword!"
And they killed the mountain-people,
So they won their just reward.

Now they stood beside the treasure,
On the mountain, dark and red.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it...
"Peace on Earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor,
Go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of Heaven,
You can justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day,
On the bloody morning after....
One tin soldier rides away.
