F-86 SABRE The Sabre first flew as the XF-86 in 1 October 1947, but it wasn't operational until 1948 as North American Aviation incorporated as much of the new jet technology captured from the Germans as was possible. Most important of which was the concept of the swept-back wing that enabled much higher speeds, approaching the speed of sound (Mach 1). It was first built as the FJ-1 Fury for the American Navy with a straight wing, but it was much slower, and therefore, less capable than the F-86. From the pilots perspective the major improvements were the ejector seat, powered controls, pressurized cockpits, and hard "bonedome" helmets. The seats and powered controls were required with the high speeds they were flying at, and a pressurized cockpit was a necessity flying and fighting from ground level to 40,000 ft. The major adversary they faced was the MiG-15 in Korea. Technically it should have been the Sabres falling to the ground in flames based on the flying abilities of the MiG-15. It generally had the edge on the Sabre, however, pilot training and willingness to engage in battle swung the pendulum way over to the United Nations (read Americans) side. They achieved a 15:1 kill ratio over their Chinese, Korean and Russian opponents. By the final stage of the Korean War Sabres were used in ground straffing as no opposition was encountered in the air. LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

The Avro Arrow And the Avro Mark 3 (never built) Arrow project cancelled by Canadian government in 1959...mainly because the U.S. government was afraid of it. |

And the Avro Mark 3 (never built) Yeah, shaking at the knees that the Canadians would finally have the weapon that would allow them to take over the world. Cordially, Rush elrushbo2@theobviousgmail.com Remove the obvious... |

And the Avro Mark 3 (never built) No, not really. However the Arrow, had it gone into production, would have been, by a goodly margin, the fastest interceptor in the world. And several other countries were looking to buy. So, an aircraft specifically designed to hunt and kill other aircraft (especially long range bombers) possibly owned by countries that may or may not be friendly towards the U.S. That, mixed with the heightened American paranoia at that time (something the world has seen a lot of lately, eh?) and immense pressure to kill the project ensues. Interesting side note: a good bunch of the engineers and techs who worked at A.V.Roe ended up in Huntsville, Langley, et al, where they helped jumpstart the US space programme. |

No, not really. However the Arrow, had it gone into production, would have been, by a goodly margin, the fastest interceptor in the world. And several other countries were looking to buy. Sounds like good strategic planning to me. Needless to say the U.S. wouldn't want to suddenly find much of it's long range bomber force obsolete overnight. Which would just further fuel an already hideously expensive missile/space race and cold war. That isn't "afraid," that just makes good common sense. Interesting side note: a good bunch of the engineers and techs who worked at A.V.Roe ended up in Huntsville, Langley, et al, where they helped jumpstart the US space programme. Muchas gracias. This MiG-21 was one of the babies that were checked and repaired by me (among many) during my service at the GDR Air Force. She went through my own hands :( Account frozen... |

I was lucky enough to get my own flypast on my last birthday from 2 F-16 fighters, Royal Norwegian Air Force, I was waving like crazy and they were so close I could see them in their cockpits. It was so amazing, one of the best days ever! When ever I start to think about it I can't stop smiling for a week. |
