How do you tell a server problem from a network problem??

You may describe yourself as a newbie, but it's a very pertinent and relevant question - and I bet it's a question the guys in Berkeley are asking themselves right now, over their morning 'get me started' coffee.

Richard,
Greetings,
I missed your reply while having my 'start-up' coffee.

Thank you for the insight.

I was leaning towards an "Its the net" problem.
But, if a server down the line is having a bad hair day, then the I/O
can get backed up as well.

SETI uses many different servers that rely on each other, so yes just one server acting up can cause backups in the entire works. Actually right now it's possibly because of a couple of servers that are not tied in directly with the other servers but instead have to go through another network link, and a flood of short running work units has overloaded that link.

So. Can the problem be diagnosed by looking at the server status?
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html

No. All of the status pages are simply snapshots that show the status when they were taken. The actual status may not show up until they are updated again, and it could change immediately afterwards.

Richard,

Regarding your observations of SG images downloading but not other files. If you take a look at scheduler's reply you notice that SG images are downloaded from setiathome.[...], but workunits and stock app are downloaded from boinc2.ssl.[...]. Of course there are non-local filesystems involved, but I think it would be safe to assume that SAH website and WUs sit in different servers.

As for trying different BOINC versions 5.2.13 worked for me about half a year ago. YMMV of course.

DUHHHHH...... Alinator!!

I am a fool. I just reread Matt's 'Thor's Day' Tech News Post and they're trying to replicate and sync up 15 TB of new disk storage in the backend. Even under the best of conditions this represents a titanic temporary extra load on everything to accomplish, and he came right and said it would most likely take until sometime during the weekend to complete.

So I wouldn't be expecting snappy service from the Scheduler/WU DL'er, regardless of what all the status indicators say, until that's over.

Uhhhh, I thought he said that it was RAID Sync that would be going on over the weekend and then he would have to do some LVM work next week.

After he does the LVM work THEN the database work begins.

Hmmm...

Well, if your analysis is correct, then you've gone and gotten me all depressed again because that most likely means we have another reservation on the 'snail trail' next week! ;-)

The data unit download issue has been going on for a while. As a former system admin, it was always a general principle that you do not add on to the current problems until the old problems are resolved if not understood.

The problem does not appear to be understood or resolved. Is it really wise to do this.

LOL...

You would think so. Personally I think they like to live in the 'danger zone' just so we can have things to yammer on about here in the fora. :-D

Actually I think they have a pretty good handle on the reasons, but as usual the real trouble is figuring out the best strategy to beat them into submission.

At the risk of hurting my 'yes man' status, I can state that as of late, it seems that Seti has had a history of applying one change over the wreckage of another. Maybe it's just been bad karma, but it seems to have happened more than I am sure the admins would like. I do not mean to belittle their great efforts.

On the other hand, I don't think the server/network problems have ever been fully understood or fixed, and if the admins had waited on those issues, we might still be crunching Seti classic.

I've got absolutely oodles of WUs waiting to download. The problem is getting them to download, which probably explains the traffic.

I dunno what the problem is, but ready to send is really looking good. Now if only the feeder/servers could parse them out...........

Take a look at the network traffic graphs. Don't know what's going on, but every 4 hours the flood gates open for an hour or so.

The information "(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)" is the the key.

You don't have anything to return the Berkeley and you don't need anything FROM Berkeley.

Check your Connection Interval (Computer is connected to the Internet about every) and Additional Cache (Maintain enough work for an additional) values on the General Preferences page for your account.

These control the amount of work you will have on your system.

Thanks, I changed it. Hoping to see some.

Nick
