The Chevrolet Volt

Something like 640 miles range with a full charge and a full tank. 40 miles before the gasoline or diesel engine kicks in.

Honda FCX Clarity

Yes, following on from the news that Honda's sexy CR-Z hybrid hot-hatch has got the production green light comes the spanking hydrogen-powered FCX Clarity fuel-cell car. Unveiled late last night at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the production ready four-seater FCX Clarity is an all-new package that’s lighter, vastly more efficient, roomier and – the crucial bit, this – far more affordable.

Honda chose the Clarity name 'to express the idea that the company is creating a fuel cell vehicle that will offer a clear solution to the challenges of the future, helping society achieve sustainable mobility'. Soundbitey, sure, but the challenge is there. This is Honda’s zero-emission gauntlet, thrown down at the energy giants, that says ‘we’re ready, why aren’t you?’

Ford's Reflex Action

PHOTO CAPTION: Ford Reflex concept car combines state-of-art diesel, all-wheel hybrid drive, lithium-ion batteries and a solar panel integrated into the roof. Computer modeling indicates the two-plus-two sports car could get upwards of 65 mpg, but Ford currently has not plans for production

Nissan Bevel Concept:

Designed by Nissan Design America (NDA) in California, the Bevel is, nevertheless, an exciting concept in its own right that challenges currently available vehicles such as SUVs and minivans, which emphasize passenger needs and comfort.

By contrast, the Bevel's focus is placed strictly on the primary user—male empty-nesters actively engaged in hobbies, recreation and community service. As John Cupit, Design Manager NDA explained to Car Design News “The idea is it's just for one guy, driving alone or maybe with his dog, a kind of toolbox on wheels. A bit selfish as a concept perhaps, but realistic”.

The Opel Flextreme
Plug-in hybrids are the next big wave in automotive technology, as the slew of concepts being released in anticipation of the Frankfurt auto show attest. Yesterday, Volvo announced its ReCharge plug-in hybrid concept. Today, it’s Opel’s turn to join the ranks.

The Opel Flextreme shares some technology and a similar frame with the Chevy Volt, although the Euro version uses a diesel motor to charge the batteries. Range on battery power alone is expected to be in the neighborhood of 100km (62 miles). Combined range is an impressive 775km (480 miles). Once the lithium-ion batteries are sufficiently depleted, the diesel motor will kick in to top them up.

A completely unique feature of the Flextreme is the storage compartment designed to hold two Segway scooters. And don’t worry if your Segways need some more juice to make it from the lot to the shops: the Flextreme can charge them on the spot, directly from its electrical system.

An electric motor driving the front wheels generates up to 120kW and 320Nm, and is also capable of regenerative braking. The generator connected to the diesel engine provides 53kW of charging power. The fossil-fuel motor is a 1.3L turbodiesel with intercooler. When functioning solely to maintain the charge level, the motor can be adjusted to maintain between 1,500rpm and 1,800rpm. However, if the batteries are sufficiently depleted, and the entire power of the diesel is required, it can increase up to 3,200rpm.

The Flextreme’s futuristic looks blur the line between hatchback and micro-van. The extensive glasswork should provide excellent forward and side visibility, although the blocky C-pillars and a pillar down the center of the rear window may hinder rearward vision.

Personally I don't like most of today's cars: They are all as round and aerodynamic as a used soap bar... And too many types look too similar to others :(
Unlike in the '50s, '60s or '70s, the cars have no own identity anymore :(

I notice that the range on a single charge of compressed air is not specified.

cars have no own identity anymore

Well after all, they are designed by people who have no own identity anymore... ;)
