Hello
downloaded boinc 3 days ago and changed connect to seti every two days.Downloaded about 35 wu's and started crunching.I now have around 10 that are 100% complete .Do I have to send them in or is it automatic? What is a good amount of wu's to have in reserve to crunch?I am doing two every 3 hours. Is 2 days enough or should I increase it?Have 80gb hard drive.2.8ghz and 520 ram and pentuim 4 processors with Ht.

Also what does the update feature do?I dont want to click the wrong thing and loose done wu's etc.I guess when you download loads of wu's seti automatically crunches the oldest one's first. If I have say 8 wu's left by next time seti conects when 2 day is up,, what happens?Does seti know how much it needs to send for the following 2 days?

Thanks

Rachel.

There is extensive documentation from Paul:

http://homepage.mac.com/pauldbuck/index.html

You can do a manual update at any time. It will also do automatic at certain time intervals. You may want to do a manual update just to send those that you have showing 'Ready to Report'

The 'Connect to Network' setting will give you a minimum of 2 days of work based on your system. Your system should do about 16 wu's a day so your minimum would be about 32 wu's in your cache (work tab). There is a thread which discusses this setting:

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=3774

You can reboot your system without loss of data. It will just restart where it left off.

You can do a manual update, but you should wait and let BOINC do it's thing. I never have more than 10 WUWUs on hand and when they get down to 4 or 5, more are downloaded....

Hi Rach,
Welcome aboard. As you know Boinc is going through some growing pains, but things are getting better everyday.
As for your workunits. First of all, what kind of connection do you have. If it is dial up which I assume, You need to go to the top left corner of your Boinc screen click on file and click on "Disable network connection". This will keep the program from continually attempting to connet when there is no live connection.
As for sending in your WU's, yes sign online, and let them all transfer. (If you have the 'Disable Network Connection highlighted Click it again to open connection.) After your Wu's have transfered, go to the "Projects" tab, right click on the project and click "Update." This will allow your work units to be reported to the main server. So you see it is a 2 step process.
I see that Texasfit has directed you to the proper links for more info, and I appreciate that. You will recieve a lot of help from people here. Just Holla.

Regards,

Rocky

I do talk this thing through in the documentation which is being updated (as it always is) so that is a good place to start. Roam around the Glossary and Index and that can and does lead you to the other areas. Read the FAC pages for BOINC and SAH ...

But one point that was not directly addressed here is that the reporting process is a two step process where in the first step the WU is reported but not all of the data is uploaded. In the second stage the data is uploaded and then cleared from the BOINC Work Manager.

Rachel,

Is your system only running 1 wu at a time?? It should be doing 2 wu's at the same time and completion of these would be around 3 to 3.5 hours for both.
