Compare AVP's click on comparatives in the left column, then the "on demand comparative," February 2007 > on on line results

As you can see...AEC, G Data, Avira, and Kaspersky are the top AVP's and within a tight group...but Kaspersky really kicks butt in the malware department.

Microsoft One Care is in the basement by itself...junk.

Good, thanks for finding the culprit post, CR and Dogbytes.

Your welcome Fuzzy.

Same goes here...glad I could be of help...internet security is everyone's business.

I thought of closing the thread, but on second thought some discussion about security would not be a bad idea...

as long as the thread doesn't get hijacked.

Sorry if I did that I would never purposely try to sabotage the forums
with Trojans and such, I don't know what picture it was But I imagine the Pic was redirected. Again I am sorry.

Pretty interesting results. AVK seems to come out on top overall. But Norton and NOD32 have the highest polymorphic detection scores. It's important to have detection for polymorphic files.

> try using Avira

Norton isn't that bad. It can find things that a lot of others won't. But sometimes it does miss some things.

The only bad one of the bunch is Windows Firewall. Trust me, they say it's a firewall but it doesn't really work.

Here is another antivirus software that is rated the best in 2006
NOD32 Antivirus Software

Comprehensive Protection
Running separate applications for viruses, hackers, adware, and spyware can slow your PC, be difficult to manage, and provide questionable protection. Beware of large, bloated internet security suites that consume hundreds of megabytes on your PC. These typically exist because vendors have acquired products and 'bundled' them together. In contrast, ESET NOD32 was designed from the core as a single, highly-optimized engine that works as a unified Anti-Threat system to protect against a broad spectrum of malware. Viruses, worms, spyware, and other malicious attacks, which are constantly evolving. ESET NOD32 utilizes patent-pending ThreatSense® Technology to detect tomorrow's threats in real-time, by analyzing code execution for malicious intent - keeping you ahead of the malware-writers.

Does the test also take into account how much resources these programs have to use to complete the task?

I know in the past Norton was a terrible resource hog.

It'll give your system limited protection, but it's not able to detect intrusion attempts very well. I just turned it off because I'm using Norton firewall. Norton firewall is paranoid.

Buddy at the computer store said that for Vista the MS firewall is better than Norton. (Scratches head in confusion)

It's easier to work with because it doesn't have a lot of settings, I'll say that. They don't compete when it comes to security though. The chimpanzees at microsoft still want you to think that Windows Defender actually protects you against spyware.

Your bud is full of duck droppings. Windows only filters inbound packets for one thing...it is only better than nothing...i.e. offers limited protection, and the default permissions are an invitation to invasion. Also the NetBios in the WINS setting should be disabled, remote assistance disabled, blah blah blah.....

Although I don't like Norton, which is a resource pig, and leaves folders all over you hard drive like pigeon droppings, it is far superior to Windows and One Care.

And btw, one of the most important considerations for internet security is to put a router with a NAT redirect firewall with current firmware installed between your computers firewall and the internet. The computers firewall is like your front door/porch, but it is better to stop an intruder at the sidewalk.

If you want to do a basic firewall check, go here. Scroll down and click proceed, then click All Service Ports in the blue window titled: Shields Up!! Services...the rest is automatic. Anything other than all green squares, like blue or red means that you are in doo doo.

This test is by no means all inclusive, but only scans the major ports...a little over the first thousand. The test requires over a minute to complete, and unlike McAfee and Nortons scanners, it doesn't require you to download any activeX controls.
