Got lots of those, too, during the last 3 days. My machines are PC's. I believe this a general problem.

I think the SETI staff is working hard to solve the up/download server problems. I suspect this is not the usual bottleneck after a long lasting outage.

I'm sure they'd fix the problem if they could - I don't think it's intentional. But not all WUs sent out are ghosts, as my HTPC just received two and they're real ones. It's started crunching again today after two weeks.

I may be wrong but this is what I had been seeing -

Units were assigned but not there at first.

Units eventually being there. It just was a case of my machines had latched on to WUs to download but for reasons known best to Seti, they wouldnt send them for a couple of days. Anyway, they eventually made it in and all was OK.

That is what I suspect may have happened to you.

Just noticed my 3 machines ,have finally, returns all reports... but now I got 30 ghost WUs and ain't 1 live on any of the 3 systems... sure hope they fix this...

Humble suggestion:

Since a fair number of us are seeing these ghost units come up, it might make some sense to not attempt to get new work for a while. The more occurrances of this happening just makes the clutter harder to clean up and may be what's causing the other messages of "no work from project".

We might want to give the team some time to figure out what is going on. They can likely go back and pull session logs based on those of us who have reported specific events.

Just a thought, and remember, it is the thought that counts... :)

If you are using Chicken's or other Optimized Apps:

Modified Instruction Set...
Disabling Optimized Application(s) for Dummies. (Like me... ;-D )


Step 1: Set ALL Projects to "No New Tasks" then Suspended ALL Projects.

Step 2: (Paranoid) - "Update"-ed ALL Projects.

Step 3: Exit BOINC.

Step 4: Copy "Projects Folder" and paste copy to Desktop - (Creating Backup)

Step 5: In original "Projects Folder" - Located "app_info.xml" in SETI Folder and renamed to "app_info-disabled.xml".

Step 6: Restart BOINC.

Step 7: Resumed SETI@Home, (still at "No New Tasks"), and hit "Update"; several times. (When "Succeeded" shows then go to Step 8; else, repeat "Update".)

Step 8: Set SETI@Home to "Allow New Tasks"; wait for ALL Transfers & 1St WU.


If remaining at Stock Application Skip to Step 13; else, to Resume Optimized App. go to Step 9.


Step 9: Set SETI@Home to "No New Tasks".

Step 10: "Suspend" SETI@Home and Exit BOINC.

Step 11: Rename the "app_info-disabled.xml" to "app_info.xml".

Step 12: Restart BOINC and leave SETI@Home at "No New Tasks".

Step 13: Reset ALL other Projects to "Allow New Tasks", and "Resume" them.

Step 14: If all works as expected/planned; delete the "Backup Folder" on Desktop.


The above will allow you to resume Downloading via Stock App. There is currently an issue between the SETI Server(s) and the Optimized App. The above list was arrived at by Richard Haselgrove and edited by me to create the above Step by Step List. Good luck. For further information, see: Ghost WU issue (and some talk about deadlines) This stops the creation of ALL new "Ghosts"... However; ALL your existing "Ghosts" will remain... Unless you first place ALL Projects on "No New Tasks" and when your cache clears out completely of all WUs then "Detach" and "Reattach" just for SETI@Home and then run the above list for SETI@Home... Somehow the "Detach" and "Reattach" clears the existing "Ghosts" from your Computer's ID... I hope this helps.

I can not disable app_info.xml - for my platform HP-UX exists only this kind of worker app. I have around 100 WU for each of them and 0 on clients.
