A quick note (which I'm writing from home) to let everybody know that Jeff and Josh have just headed out to Menlo Park to pick up the new science database server at Sun. Nobody will be around to really work on it this weekend, but we'll get crackin' on it first thing Monday.

Other notes: Dave installed a new feature in the forums to allow users to send private messages to other users a la Myspace. That's pretty cool. Also, python (one of many scripting languages) temporarily broke on bruno which resulted in some weird numbers on the server status page. I think I fixed that. Not sure if I ever mentioned it elsewhere, but I hate python and find it a complete and utter disaster. That's just my opinion, and it may be somewhat unreasonable, so I am willing to have most people kindly disagree with me. I know a lot of programmers love it. Good for them. [EDIT: I may be biased because of a wonky python implementation here in our lab - so I am also willing to be convinced otherwise.]

Well It's good to hear that progress is being made in getting poor Thumper back to life. I'll be waiting and such very patiently until thumper is and has been online as It's going to be quite a mess for a bit online, I'd expect. I do like Your updates very much and I like to read about the problems and solutions to help keep Seti running. :D In any case Take your time, We'll wait.

Glad to hear that the server has finally made it there. Hopefully you won't have too much trouble getting all the database and drives and stuff going and making fresh work for us. Until you got Thumper (Thumper II maybe?) going, I will just keep my dual core machines helping the Stanford bunch fold some proteins through the weekend.

Hi Matt,

I wish you a good week end. You will need rest. Next week will be less quiet !!!
Once again, is it possible you open a post in read only ??? With goal to inform us about the situation.
It is not always easy and pleasant to read mesage from people who ot read the first post and already ask what happen !!!
Not forget, there are , not 10 - not 100 - not 1,000 - not 10,000 - not 100,000 - but more than 1,000,000 persons waiting news.

You have a lot of "cyber" and moral (soul) persons waiting the restart.
I am sure, both of us, wait this .

Sorry for my english coming from little Belgium !!!

With hope on soon restart, keep in mind the sugestion about " read-only " post

Philippe

Hey, I'm slightly upset with this... Since the server breakdown, my average work done (or credit) has been going down at a very quick speed, and it's not fair!!! I don't want it to decrease, since it's not my fault and I was on a high average! Please, I want this solved!

Lui, your not alone. We all are suffering, but these guys are doing a great job on a shoe string budget. Just keep in mind that even though your credit is going down very quickly, that the same is true for everyone. So your relative position should not change much. It seems that my relative position has actually climbed even at a reduced RAC. Most people are completely out of work for this project. Seems that I still have a few left on some of my computers. Once the new server is up and running it will not take long for everyone to get back to where they were. We all know it's not your fault that your credit is going down. So don't worry no one will punish you for it. :-)

Mat,thanks for the updates. You guys are all doing a great job.

As has been pointed out to you twice already, you could simply read Matt's post at the start of each thread and ignore the rest. No one is forcing you to read the whole thing.

I happened to see this. Results ready to send said: 1,786,219,397. I knew it had to be a mistake somewhere along the line.

Good news, glad all of you are going to take the weekend off, good luck on Monday's task. All the updates are great, and I did not see them as the "glass as half empty", but just some education for us crunchers who are not IT pros.

Einstein & uFluids I sure are happy to get the extra time on their projects, which will shift back next week to SETI.

Hoorah! I know the team will be busy next week, and we will be sitting on pins and needles.

Best of luck with it, Matt.

As a former mainframe DBA, I know what all of you go thru when something like this happens. Long nights, days, and sometimes no weekends. Keep up the goor work and enjoy your time off. :)

The answer is to attach to some other projects. PrimeGrid is good for slower computers, because the WU's are relatively easy to process. I run this on my fast rig, and also on a much slower Celeron rig. Leiden
WU's seem to be anywhere from about 1/2 to about the same as SETI. With all the problems with SETI, I also added Einstein, though I would warn people that don't have reasonably fast computers, the WUs take about 25 times as long for my computer to process than SETI My computer is a single-core AMD 3700+ "San Diego", and it takes approximately 40 or 50 CPU hours to process one Einstein WU

Due to a long absence I'm now back crunching, actually I got an e-mail from the team at seti noting my absence lol. So was happy to have my new dual core AMD 4600 rip into some work :P
However was sad to find out that just after I connected Thumper went thump :P Having worked with computers most my life I realize these things happen, no biggie my pc's are happily crunching Einstein. Although one of them is only a dual Pentium II 350Mhz machine and yeah its struggling (6 days estimated at 315 MFIO!!)... does anyone know what projects are good for a very slow machine??

Anyway, I as well as the rest of the world are looking forward to the new server becoming operational, although I guess the download server will take a huge hit on Monday/Tuesday and possible the rest of the week lol, hope your bandwidth can cope.

Cheers for now
Cheers

Gav

I have my PII 400 Crunching on Rosetta. You'll need to have at least 500MB of RAM though as it does eat it up quickly.

I'm processing the same old WU this year on my clunky old Dell P4/350Mhz uni-core, for Climate Prediction (CPDN) ... 690 hours done / only 2700 to go! It's a great fall-back for times like these.

For what it's worth, I've switched SETI off (No new tasks) and I'll be leaving it off until Wednesday or Thursday, at the earliest .... my contribution to sparing the servers
