Message 563792 - Posted: 9 May 2007, 17:19:55 UTC - in response to Message 563787.

I just posted a news item on the front page. Turns out the Sun server won't be here until Friday. According to Fed Ex tracking it just left Tennessee last night. Oh well. I'll submit more details later today in a new thread.

This is complete bull$hit. I would call sun and yell and scream like a customer at Walmart.

Watch the language please. Have you forgotten that Sun has DONATED both the last sever AND the replacement that is on the way??? Have fun at Walmart.

So you are saying scream at the company that donated you a $50,000 server because its gonna take another day or two to ship it? Nice attitude dood. Still mad Walmart didn't hire you?

(so, for UNIX u haven't to pay a license.)

Only if you steal a copy.
LINUX & BSD are based on UNIX, but they are not UNIX.

While the *NIX vs. Windows issue is an interesting one, it really isn't "on topic" for this thread.

...

Ned, maybe u don't believe it, but I agree.

Any case, u must recognize that this was a way to pass the time 'till Thumper Thumps again ;)
It was only a joke (bad joke, isn't it? :'( )

Actually Thumper going down was planned by the aliens......their purpose
was twofold.

1) To test the intelligence of earthlings by means of a simple deprivation
test [Like a rat in a maze trying to find the cheese]

and

2) To see if earthlings are willing to continue looking for them with little
more than hope to guide them. [Are we smart enough to work as a group with
no personal reward]

Only time will tell if we pass.............

It's really hard to complain when they're replacing a FREE server for FREE.

....BTW, is Matt aware that the Beta up/download server is down?

I don't know if Matt knows, I'll ask Eric.

EDIT: He says: It's actually up, we're just clobbered with requests.

Yep, it's the same problem as with the main project.

@ Eric,

Are you sure it's just that? Right up until the maintenance outage, Beta uploads were going in just fine. Since maintenance, I don't think a single one has gone through.

The Beta scheduler, on the other hand, has been hit-and-miss ever since Thumper thumped his (her?) last, and the clamour for 'More work! More work!' started.

Mat, keep smiling, you and all your team.
I am disappointed, but I am sure you also !!!
It will be ok. Only the server will have very very big requests
of WU when it will start again !!!
I hope the server will not fail during this massive request !!!
It wil be not about thousand , but milion of requests !!!
It will need extra cooling to support !!!

We are with you

Heck, if they want to send one out my way, I'd be willing to wait until friday AFTERNOON for it.
Hurry up and wait has always been an integral part of the IT world, and at the going price, replacing the "hurry up" with "drink beer" seems an elegant solution.

Since the scheduler can request a person's BOINC client to defer communication for a certain amount of time, would it be possible to set the scheduler to defer everyone for say 24 hours? maybe 12 or 6 even? That would minimize people's PCs banging on the scheduler incessantly...

The potential problem with that is if it causes someone to miss a deadline...

Groovy! But, what's the number? (Still think they should label it æ—¥ when it arrives.)

Matt, I hope this is a helpful suggestion:

I suspect that there are many "ghost WUs" out there, I have had 2 in the last 10 days.

There are still over 500,000 results In Progress, many hosts have been out of work for over 5 days.

Could the server be forced to re-send those results early that have not met quorum yet?

What I do hate is when you install them, and tell it "Reboot Later" every 5 or 10 min. the dialog box pops back up asking to reboot. And sometimes it switches the Reboot now and reboot later buttons, so if you get used to being in one spot, it tricks you into blidly hitting reboot now. Now that's a pain, cause it forces everything closed, saved or not.

Start->Settings->Control Panel->Adminstrative Tools->Services. Find "Automatic Updates" and click "Stop" next to it. It will restart when you reboot, when you *want* to.

Hi

very very interresting idea !!

I thinki more when the scheduler will again start to work.
All the computers around the world will ask WU.
With risk of congestion of server.

Matt, i do not know if the idea is possible.
Of course, it is !! But you and the team have something else to do at this time !!!
I am really worry about what shall happen when all the system will work again.

I hope all the team will soon can say " WE MADE IT "
Sorry, correction, i do not hope !!! I know you will say.
Of course I can send hardware, but the system not need to become hybrid !!!
I am sure you receive offer about thousands of HDD, but in RAID, they need to be the same for the most efficiency.

When all of this " black period " will be over, perhaps when you will have time, is to post a forum about the technical requirements of the servers.

Now, if you want I have about 200 PC for you !!! All the same !!!
But ,...!!!! But !!! P2 - 233Mhz - 256MbRam - 3Gb HDD !!!
It was my joke of today.

Keep up the good work, the phrasing on the home page sounds like Sun is doing some donating and if so, props to them. Haven't been able to afford to donate anything except CPU cycles and the extra couple bucks on the electric bill but thanks for all the effort.

Regards
