	Another SETI Member - CoolBlue87GT has had a Laptop Stolen > here's his Post I received an email this morning - SETI has found something !!!! Message 522102 - Posted 23 Feb 2007 12:41:51 UTC That's great. Question, who do I contact to search for the laptop I had stolen ? Not a joke, I had a Compaq laptop stolen awhile back. Would love to get it back. Suggestions?

	CoolBlue87GT - The ONE thing that saved me and made it possible for me to actually recover this was that I was running Seti as a service. I don't know if you did that, or really, whether many people do. I set it that way so my wife would not have to mess with it. It would start when she fired things up. If you have it runnign as a service, and they have not wiped the laptop, there is a good chance you can get it back. I'm sure we'd be happy to help. Let me know if there's anything I can do to assist you. - For those of you who have laptops, I recommend something like Cyber Angel or Lojack for laptop recovery software. They're both pretty cool. ____________

My wife's laptop, strangely enough, just before it was stolen, had been in for a hard drive replacement. She couldn't tell me where the recovery disks I made when she bought it were, so I had to load a fresh copy of windows. Ever since then, if the machine is logged on, it will power off no matter what the power management settings are. So I stil gotta twiddle that bit. It's an Averatec 3270.... more research. But yes, got it back. Intact. Life is happy. Now to help CoolBlue here. ____________

I have seen a few PCs that the BIOS settings will override the Windows settings. Some BIOS settings work in concert with Windows settings to produce the opposite effect to the one you want... "Caps Lock" is the perfect example. If you set BIOS and Windows to apply Caps Lock when booting, the net effect is that Caps Lock remains off! ____________

It was run in the backround at start up. @CB: Can you see if the lapptop is still crunching, by checking your stats? If it is, then you have a good chance it can be found, like the Admiral's was. If it's stopped crunching, odds are the new "owner" has removed BOINC, or reformatted. I wish you luck. Having twice had my working vehicle broken into, and stuff stolen, PLUS having my work van stolen, I know how it feels to have that violated feeling thieves' victims get. The first time, I had a loaded .22 Magnum next to my bed for weeks. ____________

	I still think that the best security for a laptop is to set the Bios to boot up only from the hard drive, set the Bios password enabled, encrypt the hard drive data (optional), and have a Windows password. Most thieves won't be able to take the laptop apart to reset the Bios. After doing all that your laptop will be junk to them or any pawn shop. ____________ Account frozen...
