My general preferencer still are not updating for Seti, are they ever going to fix it???? BOINC has done this since day 1, it wont follow your preference settings to run during idle periods and it runs all the time. I quit when it first came out because of this, was just invited back over a year later, and it is still broken. |

My general preferencer still are not updating for Seti, are they ever going to fix it???? That is incorrect information. This problem has only been recent, and anyone that has been running it for the past year can attest to this fact. If you haven't been around for a year, you can hardly state that the problem has been around since day 1 without knowing what's been going on for the last year. Further, I've used every version of BOINC since v3.19 and the preferences have always been honored as far as I can recall, with the exception of this past week. |

Ozz -- you've posted a number of replies to this particular issue under multiple threads. You defend BOINC while acknowledging the preferences issue, yet you offer no assistance or useful advice to others on how to remedy the problem. If you know how to fix this problem, why don't you say so. If you're not having this problem yourself, please don't assume that it is not a real problem for others, and if you don't know how to fix it, why bother to post a reply at all? I know how long this project has been running and I know how many hundreds of thousand of systems are crunching away at the data every day, but that doesn't mean the BOINC software doesn't have problem. I'm running the very latest version (5.4.11 BOINC), and even after repeated installations, it simply refuses to run based on the preferences I've set, and there are a lot of other users making these same complaints. I've set my preferences (and SAVED and UPDATED) repeatedly. I want the processes idle when I'm working, with a delay of 5 minutes after no activity, but the process continues to run continously 24/7, unless I manually suspend it. Again, if you can help, please do. If not, quit wasting our time with useless replies. My general preferencer still are not updating for Seti, are they ever going to fix it???? |

If you are running more than one project, you can go to other projects, update the General Preferences there, and then BOINC will follow them. Most projects have not put in the code that has screwed this up. Other than that, there are .xml files that can be hand edited, but that's not for the weak at heart. BOINC must be shut down completely before editing them, they must be saved, and not saved as, but you can make the changes and have the preferences you want. The file is called global_prefs.xml Berkeley is in the middle of trying to get the new software out, because they want to start crunching the new data from the new recorder. There is only a handful of people who work for Berkeley, and only a couple of them are full time. So we sometimes have to wait for improvements and bug fixes to come through. If you're not having this problem yourself, please don't assume that it is not a real problem for others, and if you don't know how to fix it, why bother to post a reply at all? I'm glad you've seen my posts, but have you actually read them? Instead of going off on me, basically accusing me of being useless, you would see that I've posted, as well as others have, that there's a problem with the servers that hand out the preferences to the clients. It is not a problem with the software, but with the servers themselves. Anyone that has changed their preferences recently are having this problem, including anyone that has just recently signed up. There has also been posts that tell you a work-around, though it requires manually editing files in your BOINC directory, and I don't want to suggest that route to users. So, instead, I simply explain to them about these server issues, which you apparently missed. My only remedy is to wait until the server issues are fixed - as that's the only remedy I approve of myself without further complicating things for users. I have never assumed this isn't a problem for other users - in fact I wish the BOINC developers would fix it myself, and save me some headaches! But there's nothing I can do about it, other than tell people about it. I don't defend BOINC just to defend it. If there's an actual problem, I report it immediately. If there's a problem with someone's machine, I try to help them as best as I can. I reply to help out - and those that actually read my replies would see exactly that. If you don't like that fact, I suggest you don't read my posts - it's far easier than to waste your time bemoaning how useless I am. So next time, please read all the words in a post before telling someone to either "help or get lost". If you need, I can point you to the many posts where I've explained exactly this to other users, so you can see that I haven't just been argumentative and useless but in fact attempting to tell people something they don't seem to want to hear or understand. |

my preferences haven't been working since i logged back in last Nov. What preferences have those been? Perhaps a preference you've selected isn't running the way you expected because it is supposed to do something else? I'm sure everyone that has been running since November can attest that it was working up until recently. |

I was just invited back as well, and my prefs have not worked either. 24/7 seems to be the only way it works with Seti. I hope this gets fixed as 24/7 is not a viable option for me. my preferences haven't been working since i logged back in last Nov. |

I have been running SETI again since October 16 and it has been broken every day since then. Yes, it has been broken for almost three weeks now (it actually broke around the 12th, which is verified from the Technical News dated on October 12th, which mentions the database upgrade/bug). |

I have been running SETI again since October 16 and it has been broken every day since then. Someone asked on the Developer list the other day when this would be fixed and David A played dumb. David A said he had no diea what the user was talking about and asked the user for details and the user did not provide them. I was a little disappointed in David A's response. I know that has nothing to do with you! |

I confirmed this morning that if you set separate preferences for Home (at the very bottom of the General Preferences page), these will update. You will have to set each of your computers to use the Home location (the very bottom of the computer info page). I did not check the Work and School settings, but I would assume (and you know what that means) that they should update as well. Labbie Calm Chaos Forum...Join Calm Chaos Now |

Hello everybody, Earlier tonight there was the Tuesday outage. This happens every Tuesday around 17:00h UTC, lasts 3 to 4 hours and afterwards it can take a while for everything to normalize as lots of computers want to upload/download/report work. So if it was around that time you tried to attach, that's why. Keep trying, else post your messages from the Messages tab in Boinc Manager. |
