Nasa ready for Discovery launch
30/06/2006 20:31 - (SA)

Cape Canaveral - Vultures flying above the launch pad, debris falling on the shuttle: The Discovery shuttle faces several threats to its planned Saturday launch, but Nasa officials say they have taken extraordinary measures to ensure their seven astronauts return home safely.

The United States space agency wants to make sure it detects any damage caused by the same falling debris that doomed Columbia in February 2003.

Nasa has 107 cameras positioned to spot any foam peeling off Discovery's external fuel tank during lift-off from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Digital and film cameras have been placed in various locations around the launch area.

Two aircraft will point high-definition and near-infrared cameras at the shuttle during the launch.

Cameras have also been placed on the shuttle, its two rocket boosters and the external fuel tank.

A new concern came up in Discovery's launch last year - the first mission since the Columbia disaster - when the shuttle's external fuel tank slammed into a bird three seconds into lift-off.

Had you read Keith's link you'd have seen this:

This is a virtual replica of the official countdown clock at the launch site at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. It begins 43 hours before launch and mirrors the real clock by pausing during the various built-in holds during the countdown
