hi forum
until now i dont find a way for my problem
all the threads here didn´t solve my problem so i started an extra thread to find maybe the goal

here the problem:
my home lan is a server with a proxy software, with dsl and some clients on a switch

on the server working all versions from the boinc manager
on the clients is all ok with version 4.45
but if i try the version 5.2.13 or newer the boincmanager dont download wu´s
website funktion and finished wu´s are uploading with no errors
only the download dont work
if i connect the clients directly to the internet is all ok too

so what is the difference between 4.45 and 5.x.x in the download funktion? if 4.45 not working than i can understand it is my network configuration but 4.45 work

in the options menu i used the same settings in 4.45 and 5.2.13

i installed also everytime in a new folder and the registry is also cleand from all boinc entrys

thanx for help
and greetings from germany :)

edit: sorry i forgot...on all computers running win2k sp4

Hi
There are some known issues with proxy servers with versions 5.x.x. It is known why 4.45 or 4.72 will work and why 5.x.x will not work. The BOINC developers are making changes so that 5.4.6 will change how proxies are handled and this should resolve the problem. I am not sure when this will happen but I expect soon.
Regards
Ian

the Wiki article: Version History of The BOINC Client Software may be helpful for general changes made, however i'm not sure how specific it is regarding minor or technical changes

Not that it matters on this questin but you have your computers hidden. If you unhide tham others can NOT see many things you can like the ip address, email, Ect.
There is only two reasiions I can think of to keep them hidden:
1) using systems that don't belong to you which you are not supposed to run BOINC on.
2) Old slow systems you con't want others to see.

The developers will be sending me a fixed 5.4.4 with the new proxy code in tomorrow I think. I will post here when it arrives and if you send me your email address to john_brown_gordon at ntlworld dot com I will send you a copy to try. Its a special fix for NTLM proxy authentication issues. Once 5.4.6 is released you will be able to move to that.

If you are running 5.4.x and finding problems you should be on the "alpha" project and reporting bugs through the BOINC Alpha website.

(snip)

My machines are hidden because I do a fair amount of experimentation, and every once in a while I goof and kill a bunch of WUs.

... and invariably, someone tells me I need to check the RAM, make sure the fan is running, not overclock my (non-overclocked) machines, etc.

None of which apply when "operator error" was the root cause.

Hey thanks. I am on that mailing list already but I am not able to participate in the testing. Perhaps Dr A will open it up for me LOL!

Actually I often have only limited time to test so I would not be good value for the project - the only reason for "dabbling" in future versions is to help this guy and another one with the proxy auth problems which seems to be on the way now. My hope being that its all part of the error 500 set which I have now dedicated to my whole life to chasing down! :)

Ok I suggest you get the 5.4.6 version then and uninstall the old version and install that new version. This version has worked for two other people. If it still fails we will turn on tracing to see what is happening. Never give in!!!

last i heard you had to request an account on the mailing list to be able to join

well, i assume you know not all "500"'s are HTTP 500 errors

i had rosetta giving me a 500 on a download the other week, when i did a capture with ethereal it was actually a HTTP 416 lol

also would it be possible to have some of your cumulated information, as i'm writing an "Error 500 Issue" article for the wiki

also detailed info on the changes to various versions of the BOINC client would be great, something else to add to the wiki (see: Version History of The BOINC Client Software)

Now is not a good time to be trying to download or upload anything from the server. Since the outage for the weekly backup things have been sluggish. It's taking longer than usual for the system to recover.

I assume he means doing a trace/capture with something like Ethereal to capture the data going over your network connection to see what's really going on.

Unless there's some debugging tool/feature/switch in the BOINC client
