Message 230079 - Posted: 12 Jan 2006, 9:19:15 UTC

I have been running seti for 5 years.
New computer.

'boinc' intervenes.

No way to hook up, no advice without wandering thru
mazes of twisty passages all alike.

(I suppose i sound irritable. I am irritated.)

Why make it HARDER?

Most of the rest of life is getting EASIER?

Boinc wants to know a computer name to hook to.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
http:/www.setathome
seti@home.com
(I am intentionally mangling both those.)

I tried a few at random, with no hookup, no
indication of what is wanted, no hint as to how.

Can't hook up until seti tells me how, and it won't.

What 'string' (technical term) is desired.

best

dwp

26,000 odd work units, but no more allowed
unless i wander thru a maze of forums, at
random. I set up in under 5 minutes, years
ago. Now all is so improved the same me, with 40 years of computers, is looking at an hour or so
drifting thru cyberspace, random walk, for:
How to Connect

MY time has some value, at least to me....
Maybe, if i get time, to play around the fora,
seeking someone with interest in.

Or is this an entrance exam:
Only those with the patience of Job get to 'help'?

From the homepage

Get started

2) Download, install and run the BOINC software used by SETI@home. When prompted, enter the URL http://setiathome.berkeley.edu.

Special instructions:
For SETI@home Classic participants
-->

If you participated in SETI@home Classic before 23 March 2005, we've created a SETI@home/BOINC account for you. It's linked to your Classic account so that it shows your work totals and signup date from Classic.
To access this account, fill out the following form. You'll receive an email containing an 'account key' (a long random string). When you run BOINC, it will ask you for this account key. Copy and paste it from the email.

To put it in another way:

1. Install Boinc.
2. Open Boinc Manager.
3. In the toolbar select "Projects" and then "Attach to project"
4. Fill in the project URL for Boinc/Seti, which is
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu
5. Choose the "use existing account" option
6. Fill in your Boinc/Seti e-mail address and your Boinc/Seti password or account key
7. You should now be attached to the project

If not, please come back.

PS. The Boinc Wiki, source for all your answers.

Read the News at the homepage
Have a look at the Technical News
Look if your question is not answered at the Boinc Wiki

[Massive Snippage....]

Been There.
Done that.
Before Posting.

Suggest, more or less politely, that if the field
called 'computer name' really wants a 'url',
perhaps it might ASK FOR a 'URL'.

I shall retry.

BTW:
popping a 'fill in proxy' (or whatever, exactly) screen,
With No Instructions, is another dandy way to limit
participation to those who are tech weenines, as
opposed to encouraging wide particiaption.

From the Boinc Wiki:

Proxy Configuration
You only need to complete this step if you are behind a proxy server and recieve this dialog during the attach process. If you have not configured proxy settings when you should have done, you get a screen like this.

You are most likely behind a Proxy Server. Please see BOINC FAQ: Running BOINC behind a proxy server for more info.

Just fill in the details and click Next

If the host is not behind a proxy server, this question of configuring the proxy will not come up.

If, per another string, i use my seti classic password, it rejects it.

If I use the long string (identifier?) supplied it gets further,

"....url supplied is not a boinc project...."

url taken via cut and paste from reply above.

That i get the 'not a boinc project' string
would seem to indicate that comms with boinc were up.

Try following:
Close Boinc, check that neither boincmgr.exe or boinc.exe is running anymore. Go to the directory where you installed Boinc. Delete all files created today. Shut down and start over your PC. Start Boinc Manager manually if needed. Attach to the project once again by typing manually the URL.
Good luck. And come back if still not OK.

1) 'all the files created today' will be the entire installation....
Unless it predates those files?

1a) I should have though computing was a matter of science and
design, rather than 'luck'.

2) Password Flame:
I started this with my old seti password.
It worked.
It got me/us (almost) this far.
THEN the forum logged me out, whne i started this reply.
The Same Password which worked 3 hours ago does not
work now.
(I got back in with the access key....)
WHY?

OK, old seti is gone.
I should trust my CPU cycles to 'something' that won't let me
connect, switches passwords randomly, appears to have no usable
user interface, and by casual observation, has roughly handled
several other experienced users?
????????????????????????????????????

Maybe I can come back in 6 months when the beta test is over?

I wonder how many potential users simply say the local
equivalent of
fuggedaboudit
?

Just as a quick suggestion a good read is Why SETI Classic closed, etc.

This will give you a better understanding why BOINC is here and Classic is gone.

Go to your account, then to change password. Set up a password, twice. Save with the button there.

Open Boinc Manager, Attach to project.
Fill in http://setiathome.berkeley.edu as URL, and it doesn't care if you put spaces in front or behind. It considers that null-space. ;)
Hit Next.
On the next screen, choose the right side, checking the radio button (round option) before Use existing account.
Fill in the email address you registered with here (see at the top of your account plus the password you just set.
Hit Next.

That should attach you to Seti. If it doesn't, I'd be happy to know what the error is. Please goto Boinc Manager, Messages tab. Copy the messages from there and post them here.

[snippage]

Thanks.

I shall review that as needed.
I have been changing passwords for years, and, so far,
have not been able to get backed far enough out of boinc
that it challenges me.

Short version, its been running for near 24 hours, one unit
turned in. I think. The display is a bit unclear.

boinc does seem to have lost any link to the old work done.
On one level, i really don't care. seti is, i assume
about knowledge, rather than competition, at least for me.
I have 'faith' those served some purpose, whether boinc
cares to care or no.

On another level, it seems to indicate a certain
'je ne sais quoi', a certain 'mere user' syndrome.

The fate of classic seti is of some interest, more interesting
is the apparent retrograde steps in usablity.

(if it matters:
Did the 'delete todays files' route, rehooked up and it
came up relatively well. I think. Save for losing the
'work previously done'.)

[Should I start a fresh string, or leave this here?]

For the last hour, I've been on line, getting
'no work from project (Im assuming from SETIATHOME)'

Is the Problem Solved?

[Yes: I could go chase another project: prefer SETI...]

Also, some instances of 'scheduler not available'??

(I can guess the meanings, accurately, i think,
but an hour of 'no work to do' ???)

Message 232214 - Posted: 16 Jan 2006, 17:40:27 UTC - in response to Message 232152.

The Seti server & connection is having problems. It has been giving that message, error 500, I/O errors and lots more during the past days. We all have those error messages at times. Just let it run, in time things will be fixed and work will flow again.

Oh, you can see which project the message is from. In Boinc Manager, Messages tab, it will specifically say which project the error is coming from.
Example given (from Pirates@Home):

16/01/2006 18:39:00|Pirates@Home|Sending scheduler request to http://pirates.spy-hill.net/cgi-bin/cgi
16/01/2006 18:39:00|Pirates@Home|Reason: To fetch work
16/01/2006 18:39:00|Pirates@Home|Requesting 86400 seconds of new work
16/01/2006 18:39:05|Pirates@Home|Scheduler request to http://pirates.spy-hill.net/cgi-bin/cgi succeeded
16/01/2006 18:39:05|Pirates@Home|No work from project

In the Messages tab, the layout is Project, Date & Time, Message.
