Send your name to the asteroid belt on the Dawn spacecraft. Your name will be recorded onto a microchip that will be placed aboard the spacecraft accompanying it on its mission to the asteroid belt. After entering your name, you will have the opportunity to print a document that verifies your journey aboard the spacecraft.

Add your name to the Dawn Spacecraft!

LOL.

Let's assume for a moment that the spacecraft does not get obliterated by one of the asteroids in the asteroid belt. Why would one do that? So when an alien finds it they have no way to translate it to anything meaningful? Or in 100,000 years when we finally have decent space travel, they find it again?

Actually its the Idea that counts. To have my name on a a craft that is going to travel thousands if not millions of miles and possibly back again is enough for me to JUST have my name on it. Its free fun and just neat I think. So what if it explodes or jits an asteroid. There will be other crafts to put my name on. I also would like to point out that I have had my name on the STARDUST craft as well. It is currently putting its way back to earth. And in one piece :)

Obviously, you're the glass is half empty type person. The only LOL should be at you for going out of your way to criticize an idea that many people have participated in and appreciated.

HEHE!
It's not really critizism, it's a question of utility. I completely understand why it's kinda cool. It created interest in me. The answer to the question of utility in and of itself is that it's pointless. But from a different angle, it can raise public awareness and excitement about different space programs. Greater public awareness can translate to better future funding. That is reasonable. Jason is helping spread the word and thus advertising is working thus far. It would be a bit harder to actually say if it actually promotes funding but the distinct possiblity is there.

Overview

Dawn's goal is to achieve an understanding of the conditions and processes acting at the solar system's earliest epoch. Dawn investigates the internal structure, density and homogeneity of two complementary protoplanets, 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta, that have remained intact since their formation, by measuring their mass, shape, volume and spin rate with both imagery, laser altimetry and gravity. Dawn records the protoplanets' elemental and mineral composition to determine their thermal history and evolution and provides context for meteorites (asteroid samples already in hand). Dawn images Ceres and Vesta's surfaces to determine their bombardment and tectonic history, uses gravity and spin state to limit the size of any metallic core, and infrared and gamma ray spectrometry to search for water-bearing minerals.

The Dawn's Early Light is a newsletter containing information about the mission and opportunities for research by members of the science community. Copies may be found here.

Measurements Objectives:

Internal structure, density and homogeneity of two complementary protoplanets, 1 Ceres and 4 Vesta, one wet and one dry
Determine shape, size, composition and mass
Surface morphology, cratering
Determine thermal history and size of core
Understand role of water in controlling asteroid evolution
Test the current paradigm of Vesta as the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite (HED) parent body and determine which, if any, meteorites come from Ceres
Provide a geologic context for HEDs

Actually. I am not sure that you have to or not. But shouldn't it Be QUEEN Misfit?

I just realized how NASA might be using this. If they have a list of name of real people, they then have a list of people who showed public support. Then they can use this as an argument for funding. They can say "this number of people appearently approve of our project".

You are correct. I believe also it serves a purpose for the support of not only our space program but for all space programs and the general exploration of space.

Didn't I denounce you as a whore? Anyway the funniest line was 'The enigmatic Ariane Von Wolfgang refused to talk to the press. "Only dead people understand me" she said.'

Whore? You can only be a whore if you get paid for it.

Double Lynching in Cafe Seti
Thu Oct 27, 2005 4:19 AM ET165

Last night an angry mob rampaged through the normally peaceful threads of the Cafe Seti with devastating consequences. Trouble had been brewing throughout the day with small fights breaking out in various unrelated threads.

A brawl in Rocky's cafe left several passers by with minor cuts and scrapes. The combatants were unrepentant this morning. Mrs. Anon, a sexy 21 year old in a revealing Tarzan style outfit is quoted as saying "They'll all full of crap, I know crap when I see it" while Es99, a gorgeous blue eyed bombshell of 23 years, would only say "she had it coming,". The enigmatic Ariane Von Wolfgang refused to talk to the press. "Only dead people understand me" she said.

Even while the clean up was beginning in Rocky's cafe tensions were mounting as a crowd gathered in The Simonator's "Rocky's laughter is the best medicine- pictures spin off".

The ringleader Siran t' T'Khasi, Vulcan and known trouble maker, began to incite the rabble and things soon turned ugly. There were calls for calm but Siran's side kick and minion, the notorious Misfit the sleazy editor of the widely distributed Babe of the DayTM thread, stepped in and dealt with any objectors in his usual heavy handed manner. Things went rapidly downhill as the now enraged mob dragged The Simonator from his bed and hung him from a post.

This did not see the end of the troubles. Not content with it's bloody nights work, the angry horde followed Misfit to Jason Safoutin's "Signature Tesing...No replys" thread. They proceeded to ransack the place, Jason was denounced as whore and he too was strung up by the mob from a post.

The Cafe is now quiet as its residents contemplate the terrible events of the night before and prepare for the night ahead.

Like I said, in order for me to be a whore, I have to get paid for it. Oh and I am very healthy. HOTTIE OF THE DAY ring a bell? Because I was it for a day.

Stardust targets lightning return (BBC) -

The US space agency (Nasa) is confident it can land samples from a comet back on Earth next month without mishap.

The Stardust mission grabbed dusty debris from around Comet Wild 2 almost two years ago and will return its precious cargo on 15 January.

-This is the previous spacecraft that I had my sister's name and my name put on it. The DAWN craft is the next one accepting names :)

Go Here to put your name on the DAWN spacecraft. :)

As far as fearing it will be obliterated by one of the asteroids in the asteroid belt....I wouldn't bet on it. There is such a paucity of density in the asteroid belt I bet the odds would be in the trillions to 1 if not much more against that happening. Most people think 'asteroid belt' and picture a scene from star wars where the asteroids are crammed together like people on a Japanese subway train....

There'd be no reason to send it into a highly dense clustering of asteroids but it's the upredictable events that get you. The one that doesn't follow the regular patter of obit.

Read up on STARDUST...it is scheduled to land on January 15, 2005 in Utah. It is expected to put on a light show like a meteor going across the sky in the west. Too bad I won't be bale to see it :(
