Message 202945 - Posted: 4 Dec 2005, 19:56:15 UTC

Hi,
I'm trying to convert to BOINC but when I try and open it, it tries to connect to localhost, then hangs. I've uninstalled and re-installed with no luck.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Enter localhost, leave pwd empty, then 'OK'

Hi Jim, Rom Walton thinks he has a fix version of boinc. Would you like to try it and report back if it works?

Message 203133 - Posted: 4 Dec 2005, 23:33:48 UTC - in response to Message 202965.

I have the same problem as Jim; the cure Greybeard suggests won't work, because BOINC Manager hangs - there is no access to any part of the program.

More particularly; I have downloaded the install program. I have installed (I've lost count of how many times) BOINC. The lats few uninstall/clean/install cycles, I've told BOINC not to start after finishing the install (which it obeys) and nto to start when I log on (which it disobeys).

When BOINC starts, the window opens, on the "Work" tab. It then sits there doing nothing for many minutes at a time - "Close Program" tells me it's not responding.

I'm using Win98SE, and had no problems with Classic. Any suggestions (that don't involve using the menu options within BOINC)?

Click here and Boinc 5.2.14 for WINDOWS will start downloading immediately, Exit out of boinc (File-exit) install it right on over the old. No need to uninstall. Do a hard reboot, not restart. See what happens.

Just to confirm. Right now the boinc manager is open and says "disconnected" on the very bottom bar right hand side?

You might just need to uninstall, then reinstall ,but this time Uncheck the box prompt that says "make boinc my default screensaver". The screensaver and win98 don't play well. Disabling the screensaver might help you as well.

Right now I've just bulleted BOINC Manager using "Close program" (the only way to stop it); I'm downloading 5.2.14 now (I'd downloaded 5.2.13 earlier today!) and will try again. I had, BTW, unchecked "make boinc my default screensaver" on the last few occasions - but that might not mean much, since I'd also unchecked ths "start on logon" box as well, but BOINC still started on logon.

I have more robin I have a win98 system and can give more pointers. This 5.2.14 might not work either, it was designed to hopefully fix the "connection failed" problem, when the Boinc.exe couldn't talk to the manager.

I made a mistake and assumed when you said you had the same problem, that you really did, but I don't think so.

I don't think anyone mentioned it but Boinc runs a benchmark when it first starts. On a slow machine that can take several minutes where the Boinc seems to be doing nothing. Check the message tab.

edit
Also avoid the screensaver with Win98 it tends to hang the OS.

You're right - it didn't work.

The problem is however the same as Jim's original one, with perhaps one slight wrinkle. BOINC Manager was sat in the system tray refusing to open, and "Close program" had it as "not responding"; on ending the task(s), and then restarting BOINC, the message in the lower right handcorner *is* "Connecting to localhost" - and it's still sitting there "not responding".

It might not be cutting edge, but it's not that slow - Athlon XP 2500+ with 512MB of DDR Ram.

I *can't* check the message tab - the window is open (with the "work" tab open), but nobody's home.

I did avoid the screensaver; just checked, and while "boinc" is in the list of available screensavers, it isn't selected.

OK you got a few minutes? Exit out of boinc.

Go to Start, Settings, Control panel, add/remove programs, select boinc, uninstall it. While the control panel is open, click on "Display" "screensaver", and if boinc is there pick NONE instead of it, or some other theme.

Then Right click on start, pick Explore, click on "programfiles", locate the Boinc folder, highlight and delete it.

Then click "start" "run" type in "msconfig", click OK, click on the "Startup" tab, find and "uncheck" every instance of Boinc you find, there might be several.

When you have that done, Shut down your puter, then restart. Boinc should be completely removed from your system.

Now restart the installation program for 5.2.13 (not 5.2.14, although it's working on my system). This time PICK "Single user", Uncheck "make boinc default screensaver", DO NOT load on startup.

After install, reboot computer, after everything loads, then click start, all programs, and start boincmanager, now Point the cursor at the "B", right click, select "run always". Now reattach to seti.

Is it working? If so, good

There were no instances of "boinc" in the startup tab; but I unchecked SETI classic for good measure.

The rest is as I've tried installing several times.

Unfortunately - no, it isn't working.

Unless they corrected the problem, Install always put a shotcut in the startup folder with Win98 no matter what option you choose. Remove it before rebooting.

Ever since Windows 95, I think, there was this folder called StartUp. Have you checked in there that there isn't a lingering Boincmgr.exe or other link pointing to Boincmgr.exe in there?

Indeed it did - indeed I did. Starting BOINC Manager off from the Start menu still left it hanging.

Not by the time I'd finished (using msconfig); but when I started BOINC Manager from the Start menu it still hung.

Oh lord, you have classic running too? THat's one big issue, boinc is a lower priority and classic gets all the processor, boinc won't do nothing.
