I have been trying to connnect to seti via boinc for months now and nothing works. I have found some information on the port numbers that are used and allowed these in my firewall (not in XP but on the DSL router) and I still get the same message. 18/11/2005 08:20:44||Attempting to communicate with [setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu] timed out 18/11/2005 08:20:48|SETI@home|Scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah_cgi/cgi failed with a return value of -182 18/11/2005 08:20:48|SETI@home|No schedulers responded Can someone let me know why this is not working and what port numbers I need to enable to allow access to the internet. Boinc manager says that it is connected to the local host. Please help Phil |

The error message you're receiving, return value of -182, is a time-out message. What happens if you do a tracert from your computer to setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu? You can copy the results and paste them into a reply here. Sometimes, if there seems to be a blockage between your location and Berkeley, using a proxy can get you around that block. But let us know what a trace shows. MJ ![]() |

This problem is a timeout error, and solved by using a "public proxy server" - refer to thread: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=21732 Basically you set up your BOINC software to use a "proxy server" and select one from the list at http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html - (Most of them seem to work - I was lucky first time) Seems a roundabout way to do things, I know, but just shortens the route to the SETI servers so the pings aren't quite so long. But let us know what a trace shows. My guess is that that the route is the same but the routers at UCB are so busy they are not able to cope. Overload I would say so packets are dropped. Hang back a while and see if this clears. How long you had this problem? I assume you are not the original poster here but you have a similar problem. ![]() |

Another silly one, when you entered the URL for attachment did you use: The SSL is added by the link through BOINC (and DNS), Tony. So you enter setiathome.berkeley.edu and end up at setiathome.SSL.berkeley.edu |

go to C:\\programfiles\\boinc and in that directory is an xml file named "account_setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu" does it look like mine with NO spaces in the master_url line and is the hex key the same as the key seti emailed you (note: don't display your hex key to anyone) - <account> <master_url>http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/</master_url> <authenticator>insert your hex key here</authenticator> <project_name>SETI@home</project_name> |

Have you upgraded to the latest boinc version 5.2.11? What is you're problem? I haven't seen that described. The original ip/dns you traced is for the scheduling server. The IP I asked about is the download server and goes through the Cogent network, the scheduling server goes through the campus network. |

so you can't traceroute either throught the campus or through Cogent? hmmm I guess both could be overloaded, but I'm not seeing mass reports of dropped connections on the boards. Interesting |

Another stupid question: do you use any programs like "childwatch" or similar? They or other programs try to reserve port 80, or 1043 or 31416 |
