Intelligence works quite well and doesn't slow down the computer. I bought my first one in 1979 and have never had a virus, all without having some program running watching everything I do.

Have fun,

David, I rarely flame anyone and I don't really want to here but I find your unnecessary post an insult to anyone who has ever had a virus inadvertently infecting their computer. I seriously doubt your statement that you have never received a virus except for you online time must be extremely limited which shows your narrow minded point of view and useless post.

You mean have never had a virus, that you know of.

Seeing as the only way you could know is if you had them all memorized, and you regularly scanned all the code on your computer.

Heh.

Oh, Simonator, I don't know! I was born with mine, and I think I got it from my dad!

But I actually have had trojans and one time my virus protection prevented 5 - 6 different vira from being implanted in my system from a mail, that wasn't even to me, but came as spam! And that was before I got MailWasher installed!

Well asshole, I didn't say I had never received a virus, I said I had never been infected with one. And I have been online since 1985. My post wasn't intended as an insult but yours was. I have received nothing but rudeness and insults from the lot of you since I started posting here. I wonder why I keep trying. I must be lonely, I had better get a life. I think I will go see a movie, at least there I won't have to put up with your crap.

David I read your post and I understood that you meant not doing silly stuff like running kazaa and downloding any and all .exe files is a giant first step.

I also understand that the wording of the post could have been interpreted as an insult, but I didnt feel attacked.

I do not have a permanently installed AV solution on my desktops. I scan the systems, at least once a month, using Trend Micro's Housecall product.

Google it, its fun, free and does not slow your machine down when not scanning.

Maybe you should look at your post again David, By your own words you were looking down upon us minions. It was a snooty post implying your better and smarter than the rest of us. As far as being an asshole yup! I got one don't wear it out.

Likewise trojans and every thing else that exists, AVG soaks them all up, fantastic.

I've been using AVG free for about 2 years now. Never had a problem. As to some assertions that carefull browsing and e-mail use will suffice, is a load of crap !! You just haven't hit a website that's been hacked yet.

Yes, the more mentally challenged here seem to have missed the point that intelligence has more than one meaning. I apologize for over estimating the people in the clique here. For the more open minded I simply mean that *you* can take charge of your security and by constantly reading and learning can manage your computers without having an anti-virus program constantly running and slowing it down. I understand that most of you have already made up your minds and anything I say that contradicts your prejudices will not be believed. Why you feel required to attack me with rudeness I don't understand but I will not try to open your minds, that is futile.

Yes, AVG works for me. It regularly updates its virus signature files, and does not appear to slow down the machine (although my computer is slow by modern standards, so i probably wouldnt notice...)

Of course, intelligence DOES come into it - you are more likely to pick up a virus if you spend your time surfing dodgy porno sites, and opening obviously dodgy e-mails.

Yep, but this would make my reply pointless, so I ignored it :o)

Depends on what you use it for.
Managing a bunch of crunchers having no HD, no VGA and no Keyboard,
just by using "ssh" is what I would call awesome.

Yes indeed!

A friend of mines website host was hacked once, and every index.html or similar page on the server, had an 'iframe' reference inserted very close to the top of the pages code, he got caught out, the upshot of the hack was an instant explosion of popup's (probably to keep the user busy), while at least 3 different small 'payloads' were very quickly acquired on to the unfortunate users machine; all the payloads were nasty, one was a premium rate dialler, the other two were virus's, which were very difficult to remove, one of the small payloads had at least 3 different hooks into the operating system (including changing, then locking the homepage setting) and if any one of them were removed, blocked or altered, then the whole suite suite of goodies was re acquired, lovely!

My friend warned me, and I went to have a look having taken precautions (popups blocked, java and active-x turned off, etc....), and I nearly laughed my arse off at all the frenetic attempts to infect my machine, it was so bad that the original simple page couldn't be viewed.

The Webpage was easy to fix, the damage caused by it was not!

Suffice to say the web browser being used was internet exploder, on windows.

Be safe out there,

BTW, My intelligence is getting more than a bit dodgy and unreliable recently, it looks like an upgrade is on the cards before I'm left on the street somewhere, wondering who I am. I read on this thread they can bought? My local PC world seems to be out of stock, can anyone assist with another source, time is at a premium.
