Who or what is NEZ? What computers and operating systems do they use? Why do they do it? Any idea about how much it costs them. What about some of the other leaders? |

Who or what is NEZ? What computers and operating systems do they use? Why do they do it? Any idea about how much it costs them. Hi! If you look at the top team, Seti.Germany, who have 7700 hosts and a RAC of 230.000, then a RAC of 300.000 would equal about 10.000 computers! This number is fairly high, since most of the hosts in Seti.Germany don't do much work, but should be in the right ballpark. That's 1.5MW of electrical power alone! A rough guess at the cost of a WU (hardware + electricity) would be around 3 cents for a fairly optmized setup. You can easily get twice of that... 300.000 credits at ca. 22.5 credits per WU result in ca. 13.000 WU/day This adds up to spending 400$ - 800$ per day.... Regards Hans P.S: Still waiting for a post from Mr./Mrs. NEZ on these boards :o) |

I did not consider for one moment that no one would know who “NEZ†is. I thought the whole reason for SETI @home was public good. For no one to know who or what NEZ is seems very strange. Are they the trilateral commission? Is NEZ realy just Art Bell during the week? Or worse- Matt Drudge? Are they the same people who killed Kennedy? Are they lost Aliens among us who forgot their radio frequency to call home? Is the computer they use one 6502 microprocessor, cooled to one degree above absolute zero with a clock speed of 2 trillion million gigahertz? Or are they really a bunch of guys from the NSA (no such agency) with nothing better to do? By the way, with all this number crunching all over the world with hundreds of thousands of computers at any one time for years, what exactly has SETI@home found to date? |

For no one to know who or what NEZ is seems very strange. I bet Berkley know. Wonder how we can get the info from them? (No you are not allowed to hack into a puter). BOINC-Wiki-Thanks Paul It's not the speed but the quality. Until I get a faster computer. |

For no one to know who or what NEZ is seems very strange. Maybe it's them, the ETs. They're using their advanced supercomputer technology to help the project, and by doing so they're keeping our attention focused in the wrong direction. ;-) [edit] Anyone up for a snipe hunt? Just don't say anything negative about gw or you'll find all of your communications routed through virginia and dc. I didn't know Hacking was a crime, It's actually cracking that is. Isn't hacking just the attempt? Actually, there are companies PAID to crack into other computers. Say a bank wants to know that's it's secure, so it pays a company to crack their security. It happens all the time. In this instance, cracking is quite legal. Hacking has become a bad name, since early on. You had old time hackers like Captin Crunch (who hacked phone lines), the 4-1-4's (a group of kids from Milwaukee in the early '80s who gained access to a lot of computers around the world, but were not malicious), etc. So, depends on your definition of each. Sometimes it might be a crime, sometimes not. My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |
