The full moon is also pretty impressive since the moon is at it closest to the Earth now. relative size of the moon at apogee and perigee

The moon here looks orange with all the smoke in the air.

Ah, a pumpkin moon--just in time for Halloween!

(As an aside, if you're out on the left coast, take care of yourself and/or your family as needs dictate rather than spend time micromanaging BOINC)!

The APOD site is getting humorous. I just followed a link from an APOD archive page and wound up on YOUTUBE watching a music video of Corey Hart's : Sunglasses at Night song. lol.

The APOD archive had a neat little movie of the figure 8 (analemma) you get if you take a picture of the sun's position at the same time each day for a year.

This is an awesome thread, I've found a slew of great pictures I now use for desktop images here. Thanks to all who've shared them! That huge Andromeda Galaxy image posted by A/C is my favorite yet, I've been fascinated by Andromeda since I caught my first blurry glimpse of it through a 4 inch scope in 1973. We've sure come a long way since then!

The Holographic Principal.
If you relax your eyes to line up corresponding shapes (I used the black <'s in the middle) you will eventually see a teapot in the foreground. If cross your eyes, instead of relaxing them, you'll see a "hole" in the shape of the teapot.

Try as I might, I cannot see anything in that picture, but it makes my eyes hurt.

I've never been good at seeing stuff in such images though. :(

For all I know, Waldo could be hiding in there, I'd never see him, either. :P

Try moving your eyes closer to your monitor, but do not let them focus inward. Let them drift outward until identical shapes cross over each other. At that point try to hold your eyes there.

Gave it another shot. Gave up when I felt like I'd get a headache lol

Goes to show you can lead a cat to water, but you can't make him see the teapot. :)

Picture of the Day 26 Dezember 1996

Remember Carl Sagan

Astronomer, educator, author, pioneer in exobiology, Director for Planetary Studies, and David Duncan Professor of Cornell University, Dr. Carl Sagan succumbed to pneumonia on December 20, 1996 after a two year battle with bone marrow disease. He fought as tenaciously and courageously for his life as he did for the values of science and democracy. He is survived by his wife and collaborator, Ann Druyan, his sister Cari Sagan Greene, his children: Dorion, Jeremy, Nicholas, Sasha, and Sam, and by his grandson, Tonio. He is also survived by his in-laws, Harry and Pearl Druyan.

R.I.P

Greetings from Germany NRW
Ulli

From the hubble website; April 24, 2008 09:00 AM (EDT)

Astronomy textbooks typically present galaxies as staid, solitary, and majestic island worlds of glittering stars. But galaxies have a dynamical side. They have close encounters that sometimes end in grand mergers and overflowing sites of new star birth as the colliding galaxies morph into wondrous new shapes. Today, in celebration of the Hubble Space Telescope's 18th launch anniversary, 59 views of colliding galaxies constitute the largest collection of Hubble images ever released to the public. This new Hubble atlas dramatically illustrates how galaxy collisions produce a remarkable variety of intricate structures in never-before-seen detail.

Hey!
You can try googling for "starburst galaxy/galaxies". They look pretty awesome (especially when you realize their sizes!).
