OK, so my house was robbbed and computer and other items stolen (it's a felony now b/c of some of the items) and the cops, well, don't have a clue at the moment. I check my seti progress regularly to see if they hooked it to the net and maybe are transmitting data... AND THEY ARE! Is there any way I can get an IP address from my account that is being used by them to track em down? This is basically the only way I can get my stuff back and I told my investigating officer about it... he said I need to try to find em this way since he has no clue.

You'll need your account key (otherwise this would be security threat), but if you have that, go to your "Your Account", then to "View Computers." You should see all the computers attached to BOINC with your account key. Select the one that was stolen and you should see its IP address.

Hope you catch them... the benefits of SETI never cease...

@ Jason,

I'm afraid he can't as he has no host here. I think Taylor C. Gragard has only (a) host(s) at Classic.

Right... that's unfortunate... yet another reason to switch to BOINC... an anti-theft device!

You can try sending an email to davea at ssl dot berkeley dot edu and explain the situation and see if he can help. I believe that this has happened before.

Unfortunetly I still have the classic on the computer. Does that mean that this search is in vain? :( But yes, seti@home to catch the thieves, I love it.

Unless of course the thief/thieves are using a router. Then all you will see is the network IP. I use a router and the Seti website shows my network IP.

Shouldn't it be the polices job to do the investigating? It sounds like a simple matter of a court order to get Seti@home to (legally) give up the info. Them (the poilce) saying "duhhh.....I have no clue" sounds like their basic "snowjob" to me.

I would suggest talking with another investigator. Most Police stations now have a 'cyber' investigation unit. They deal mostly in pornography, fraud etc, but have the know-how, and equipment to do things like this. Even some of the smaller communities have at least 1 detective that is computer literate these days.

Good luck, and hope you get your stuff back.
It is a sad sad day when someone takes your spoon away from you...

If the police aren't willing to follow up on a lead, they aren't doing their job... Contact a public official.

I wish there was more I could do about the police, but in this town they don't exactly care too much I don't think. Only 1 investigator in the city for burglaries and well, he isn't much help at all. Also, by the means at which all the stuff was taken and the recent 'spree' by the same means I am not too sure these guys know what a router is. And the email address givin in an earlier reply I sent a message to... but never got a response back. *sigh* I hate doing all the damn police work. Hell there were fingerprints all over the window they used to get in, the cop on the scene looked at them... then just left without ever doing anything. It's things like this that make me hate my local cops. All they seem to do here is freakin give speeding tickets for going just a tiny bit over hoping you are drunk.

David is currently on vacation. Try rwalton at ssl dot berkeley dot edu and see if he can get anything or knows who can.

Hoping a little bit of humor helps you in this unfortunate times.
