This release was just posted to the Alpha testers yesterday afternoon. It's intended for Alpha Tester Group only. Heffed, Rom, and I did the Pre-Alpha testing on the dial up portion of this. Here's Roms email in the Boinc Alpha mail list: Howdy Gang, I'm releasing 5.00 for Windows to you all even before I've completed my test pass. This release includes Account Management improvements and is enabled out of the box as well as dial-up improvements. Issues I know about are: 1. The manager doesn't currently pick-up preferences changes after downloading new preferences from a project server. 2. The manager doesn't ever stop trying to connect when the modem fails to be able to establish a connection. Let me know of anything else. :) ----- Rom I know thsi is not ready for Beta testing yet. tony |

2005-07-01 19:31:19 [SETI@home] Message from server: Need major version 4 of the BOINC core client. You have 5. You may have an outdated code verification key. This may prevent you from accepting new executables. If the problem persists, detach/attach the project. Fred BOINC Alpha, BOINC Beta, LHC Alpha, Einstein Alpha |

Hmmmmm... People should skip jumping into this release for a bit. The major version change is causing additional problems that were supposed to already be resolved months ago. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

It just doesn't recognize the Boinc server version, Rom. So any units still around, as I noticed last night on trying it, will be deleted. Especially if a project is offline (like CPDN is at this moment!). |

Looks like Rom is making sure this release stays in Alpha. He fixed the Alpha server to work with it. He didn't mention fixing the regular seti server. tony |

I downloaded 5.00 because BoincView reported a new dev version of BOINC avaliable. I went ahead and backed it back t 4.x because I like to be able to do the crunching that 5.00 won't let me do (being as it is an alpha of a major release, which servers won't recognize). <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=567" /> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page">BOINC Wiki</a> <a href="http://www.tamaness.hostrocket.com/BOINC_team.html">Gideontech BOINC team!</a> |

Well I have been asked to not mess with the public and beta projects directly. I've sent email to those who can update the server scheduler, until then people should avoid using 5.00. Besides, on certain projects the science application quits running when it detects a 5.00 client, I've sent email to the various projects informing them about the 5.00 client. People should stick with 4.45 until things are worked out. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley My Blog |

Well I have been asked to not mess with the public and beta projects directly. I would, but you have not made a 4.45 Macintosh version yet ... |

Rom.. you really need to find a better way to manage the release of SW like v5.0 - like passwords, cookies or user keys. (I.e. a user's password to access a secured directory is that user's acct key, and only some are allowed) 5.0 had been available for, what, about a day, and there seems to be threads on every project's website about 5.0 not working! From all I've gathered, 5.0 is alpha, yet it seems to be available to anyone. You'd cut down your headaches if you kept alpha stuff to alpha testers, beta stuff to beta users, and releases to the world. It's not that hard to do with apache. Even if someone posts a link to 5.0, others that try to download it can be restricted. |

If you can't read the big red letters that say "MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING" Then you need your eyes tested. If you do try development software and it does not work go back to your previous version. And don't get upset when things go boooom. 98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8 And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer. |

I have no good reasons to run the development versions, other than Dev quite often works better than public release because bugs in the public version have been fixed. <img border="0" src="http://boinc.mundayweb.com/one/stats.php?userID=567" /> <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page">BOINC Wiki</a> <a href="http://www.tamaness.hostrocket.com/BOINC_team.html">Gideontech BOINC team!</a> |

If you can't read the big red letters that say "MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING" Then you need your eyes tested. This was fine when dev versions were being "released". Now dev versions are being restricted, but people are still looking for and finding dev versions. Unfortunately there is now no way for people to know how far along the dev process a new version that they have happened across might be. I myself am more than happy to run beta versions, but there is little joy to be had in mucking around with alpha versions. Kolch - Crunching for the BOINC@Australia team since July 2004.
