Well, **fi** is correct, because a tittle is: "A small diacritic mark, such as an accent, a vowel mark, or a dot over an i", but Misfit is more accurate, as both your question and the definition call the "dot over [an] i" a dot. A tittle could be more than one thing, while the dot over an i is just that--a dot.

So, what you're saying Tom, is that the "tittle" is basically an all inclusive description of those little marks above letters? Thing is, the lowercase [i] would not be a lowercase [i] without the dot which tells me that the dot is actually a PART of that letter. I don't see how it could be catagorized with the tilde of other marks such as the quomlot{sp}. But, who's to argue with the king of all dictionaries, Webster's? >;-)

You're right, it wasn't. That's the problem with editing posts, people read the original and miss the edit, especially when replying. I tried to make it a faster edit so that would happen, but I got caught again. >;-)

Hey, wait a minute! If we're going to start using the "tittles", I need to whip out my character map utility. >:-)

EDIT:
Oh, wait. I don't know that FreeBSD/KDE have that kind of utility. >:-/

All i know is umlauts are used to replace 'e's next to the letter with the umlaut on
