Welcome everyone to the 3rd installment of Space and Science Trivia. I really don't have any rules here(I hate rules) but id like to ask everyone that post a question to please have an answer for their question so we aren't all left hanging if nobody gets it right. I'd like to also welcome Jim Franklin to the thread. Your questions are proveing challengeing...keep'em comeing! ALso anyone with trivia in any other field of space or science is welcome. It doesn't have to be astronomy and space travel. Computer science, Archeology, Paleantology...etc. It's all science. This is a community with a wide range of people with interest in many fields of science. We still have some open questions: Q132: What are the three Main Inner Solar System Asteroid families (NEA's) called, and which pose the greatest threat the the Earth. Posted by Jim Franklin. We seem to have 2 questions for Q133 . one has been answered already. Q133a: Discovered in 1977, which Solar System body has an average orbit beyond Saturn but nearer than Uranus? Posted by Jim Franklin. Q.134: What is a Wolf-Rayet Star? Also posted by Jim Franklin. Misfit would you like the honors of closeing the old thread with some of those GIFs that Rob likes so much? Just for record: Thread created Feb 8 2005. The day that more people persue science instead of the other sex is the day that we all have to look at ourselves and know that we did wrong. |

ok Jim goin to take a stab at Q.134: What is a Wolf-Rayet Star? Wolf-Rayet stars are hot (25-50,000+ degrees K), massive stars (20+ solar mass) with a high rate of mass loss. Strong, broad emission lines (with equivalent widths up to 1000Ã…!) arise from the winds of material being blown off the stars. |

Q135: what is unique about the X-15s landing gear? Q136:Which U'S. manned spacecraft made the 1st steering reentry controlled entirely by computer? |

A135: Solid rubber tires. Sorry man, it had training wheels... just kidding. It had conventional dual wheel nose gear but the main(touchdown) landing gear consisted of a pair of skids that extended from the aft fusalage. The X-15 landed on the dry lakebed runways at Edwards AFB, California. A136: Space Shuttle whatsitsname. Gemini 11, september 15, 1966. Q137:What spacecraft was the 1st to orbit the Moon and return to Earth? Q138:Who was the 1st African-American woman to fly in space? |

A:137 Apollo 8 was the first "manned" spacecraft to orbit the moon and return to earth A:138 Dr. Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman in space. Hey I bumped the thread back up, where are you terrorhertz??? |

Misfit, do you know where Terrorherz is hiding? "...I'm sorry for everyone in the trivia thread that I may have let down but I hope to be back by the time of the shuttle launch. I have a pile of shuttle trivia I hope to have for everyday from liftoff to landing. It was a hard decision for me to make but I felt that getting more PCs online was more important in the end. So I let the trivia thread go for now. I can only hope that everyone understands..." Terrorhertz will be back as soon as he can. Study up on your space shuttle lore. me@rescam.org |

Thank for keeping the thread bumped everyone! Even though they pushed back the launch I'm starting the shuttle trivia anyways. Here is some trivia of past delays: Q139: Shuttle Mission 41D's main engines shut down on the pad after ignition because of damage to an integrated circuit(IC) in the spacecraft computer. what caused the IC to fail? Q140: What caused a launch delay of Shuttle Discovery, STS-70 (June 1995) A:137 Apollo 8 was the first "manned" spacecraft to orbit the moon and return to earth. Right Appolo 8. That mission also racked up the most 1st records of any other flight. look for more on them in the future. A:138 Dr. Mae Jemison was the first African-American woman in space. yes. She flew on STS-47 in September 1992. |

Q139: Shuttle Mission 41D's main engines shut down on the pad after ignition because of damage to an integrated circuit(IC) in the spacecraft computer. what caused the IC to fail? Welcome Back terrorhertz! Q139 - Not quite sure on what caused the IC to fail but STS-41D had many computer problems that delayed the launch 3 times. Q140 - Woodpeckers damaged the external tank and delayed STS-70 by a month. To truly explore, one must keep an open mind... |

A140 - Woodpeckers damaged the external tank and delayed STS-70 by a month. YEP. woodpeckers pecked over 100 holes(some over 4" wide) in the external insulation covering the External Tank.(ET also known as "the big orange tank") Because of the expense and time lost. Kennedy Space Center appealed to employees and the public for suggestions to prevent it from happening again. They got an immediate answer. They placed "owls" of all types(wood, plastic, inflated on tethers, statues, etc.) on the Rotating Service Structure and on the Fixed Service Structure. Never had the problem again. A139:Human Saliva(spit) contaminated the IC while it was being manufactured and potassium Chloride(KCI) in the spit ate away part of the IC circuitry. Q141:How many people ane in the on0board crew to operate the giant crawler-transporter(CT) when it hauls the Shuttle to the launch pad? Q142:What is the weight of each shoe (or track segment) in the tracks of the CT? |
