That's not the issue.
When one does take a backup, or introduce new software, or whatever story the guys at Berkeley keep on telling us before (or after) an outage, you don't go home before the whole system is up and running well.

It's only 5am about three more hours before the team gets in to
review the carnage. I am sure they don't pay overtime so I don't expect
the to stay over....

The team always seems to fix things up just it takes time
That why we have BOINC to crunch all those great projects out there!

AT least they could inform us what is happening and no like this, on "Status page" is all "green" and nothing is working, do they think we are stupid?

I think it's not us or dem, who are stupid, but the machines. They are up and running, and don't get it, that they are not interacting with the outer world. And the team has still to arrive at work, as it's not even breakfast time in Berkeley.

In the absence of any definite news, we are left with having to guess. In that spirit, here are my guesses.

a couple months ago the added a new Server DB, and are trying to use the Old server/DB as a back up. They had trouble getting the Back up done properly back then, and just let it run. Then several weeks ago they tried and succeeded at cleaning up the old results from the DB. This clean up should shorten the back up time and is probably one of the reasons for doing it, the other would be to increase the free disc space.

Last week, it appears they tried to back up the data base. There was a problem with it. This problem led to the RAC being way off base. Thursday they tried it again. This process requires alot of indexing and Disc read/writes. This then prevents Users from contacting, submitting, and recieving work.

It took days the last time they tried the full back up. The Waiting to validate number increased then as well. Then when back it was reduced by roughly 6k per hour.

Don't be too surprised by Stats of any kind being off for a while.

As with the other 90% of seti/boinc percieved problems the cure is "Patience".

A little news would be nice too.

5:27AM... it's not even time for consciousness yet.

So long as I get a WU after installing Tiger, I'll be happy.

@Berkeley: That's 6PM EDT. Fix it. I wanna be crunching as soon as I leave the store.

Copied from my post on the the European network problems thread.

OK. I mailed the network support people at Berkeley just to let them know about this problem - they probably know already but just to make sure. An unwelcome start to their day I guess.

Thanks Ian.

Perhaps we should call for a Firewall and Network status entry on the Server Status page...

Same here. No ul/dl since the scheduled outage.

Well, Zan lost his ring and he and Jana can't activate their Microsoft Wonder Twin Windows Update(tm) powers without it. [snicker]

OK np Mike. There is a hint in the network graphs but without knowing the topology its hard to work out for sure what the problem might be or fully where it is. Yes...perhaps some sort of status would be good. If we knew the names/IP addresses of the routers/devices etc on campus then we could have a pretty good go at working it out for ourselves tbh. But...names change and they won't want to be constrained that way I guess.....so yes a status would be nice. Certainly save millions of posts and bandwidth with people making enquiries. Cheers

You have a reading problem..........

April 29, 2005
The DB reinit went fine. But then we had a problem with a recently installed software firewall. It was working when we left the lab yesterday but cut off the data service interface a short time later. We have switched off this firewall for now. Software firewalls are now required for all machines by campus policy but we will get an exception until ours is working. Note that we are, and always have been, behind a hardware firewall that works great.
