Cleaning out a closet, I ran across this book that I had bought back in the late 70s. It was written by Thomas J. Ryan. As far as I can find, it is the only book he has written. A college student writes a computer program that runs wild, entering other computers, making hidden partitions, collecting information and eventually becomes aware of itself. A number of years later it starts looking for it's creator. I am starting to reread the book. I think it would make an excellant movie about an intelligent virus that tries to take over the U. S. |

The name of the book is "The Adolescence of P-1". P-1 being the name of the virus standing for "Privileged One". |

Somehow the last snapshot/migration screwed things up. When the Classic people convert their acct info over to Boinc it resets the date to day one. Basically ignore the date when you see April 3, 1999. |

Just those that converted after May 14, 2004. Yours is correct after all... I actually joined in Dec of last year and couple weeks later converted. My Classic count never did get applied to this count. It wasn't very much, but it never did get converted correctly. I'd rather speak my mind because it hurts too much to bite my tongue. Just those that converted after May 14, 2004. Don't read like a vulcan. I did say last snapshot. Btw, it was March 2005 , not May 2004. I dont think the 4-3-99 date was an issue until recently. Anyway, we've gone O/T again. :) |

If you joined Classic after May 14th and before the latest update your account was NOT converted until the last update. It is those accounts that have screwed up.. Now pay attention!!! >A college student writes a computer program that runs wild, entering other >computers, making hidden partitions, collecting information and eventually >becomes aware of itself sounds a lot like Terminator. It also reminds me of something I read in the news several years back about someone that wrote some "learning" programs but had them isolated on his PC. after a while the "Smarter" programs began killing off the programs that didn't learn as fast. The PCs where never connected to the net for safety reasons of course. I don't have a link or the name of the project. |

(snip) Or Tron, Demon Seed, the new Battlestar Galactica (though becoming sentient may have came first before infiltrating computers during the first colonial war), South Park (Dawsons Creek Trapper Keeper 2000), Asimov's Robot series, etc, etc. Very popular theme in science fiction. What seems novel about this, well, novel is that the computer here wants to find its creator. Searching for a parent, God, or just insight into its own identity? |

It needs help to get into contact with a scientist developing a cyrogenic matrix storage unit. > >The book is full of computerese from the 70s. Need to be computer knowledgable to understand much of it. |
