1) Message boards : Number crunching : Wondering why this WU failed to validate? (Message 1230554)

Post:
Was just flicking through my AP tasks and came across this one.
Appears that both clients reported the same results but failed to validate against each other.

Possible bug or am I missing something?
Thanks
Peter

You can always use cc_config to force BOINC to report results immediately if it bothers you, however, this is not advisable as it puts extra load on the already busy seti@home servers.

Try this:
Go to BOINC Manager > Tasks Tab > Select a running task > Press Show graphics.

Take the screenshot from there.

It appears even though your Task had a validation error, you where still granted the credit for the task.

Well logically from my project stats:

Project Current Credit Current position % of total
Collatz Conjecture 750.55 16,092 0.07
DNETC@HOME 128.80 3,878 0.01
Einstein@Home 14,029.23 101,194 1.25
PrimeGrid 158,988.88 4,610 14.20
Rosetta@Home 210,020.58 10,597 18.76
SETI@Home 716,742.29 20,259 64.02
SETI@Home Beta 65.52 7,429 0.01
World Community Grid 18,863.66 123,595 1.68

The only project the credit could have come from is seti@home, considering it is the only one that has more than that amount of credit. I know it has to have been a single project because I never run more than one at a time!

Discovered something quite interesting in my stats:

-------------------------------------------

Best five days
Date Credit
2010-04-29 16:41:44 256,598
2009-09-08 16:21:08 10,866
2009-09-09 16:23:06 10,590
2009-09-06 16:16:39 10,459
2009-09-07 16:22:21 10,024

-------------------------------------------

Thats a fairly huge amount of credit in one day for me. Considering I have only ever had a few computers connected!
I wonder is there anyway to find where that credit came from!?

The problem is that many old computers do not have the hardware to enable them to process tasks in time to meet the work unit deadlines set by the project. Therefore, it may turn out to be a waste of computing time and energy.

If you are referring to the screen-saver you can change the settings of it from your preferences page. Any changes will be applied next time your client connects to the server.

If you want to deactivate the screen-saver completely, you can do this from your computer control panel.

Hey guys!!

I have decided that I am going to switch my home operating system over to ubuntu now that I see no use in having windows.

It is this host:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=5377497

Can someone please suggest and give links to the best optimised applications to use. I will be using the most recent version of BOINC and a 64-bit operating system. This computer is also CUDA enabled. I am already currently running the most recent version of the Lunitics unified installer. However, I have manually set up my other ubuntu machine. Lunatics links would be preferred because I trust their sources.

Also will I be able to merge my windows and ubuntu computers in my profile? Or does the system not allow operating systems to be different?

Thanks
Hammeh

NB: I have already started to drain my WU cache :P

A quick search on google turns up this:

Normally, I just keep a fairly large cache of seti@home work units. Even with this outage I have enough work units for about another 2 days!

You may also want to set up in your computing preference that seti@home downloads a small cache of work units in case things like this happen. I have all my computers set to keep enough work for 3 days and I have never ran out of work other than when the whole project goes down for long periods which is fairly rare!

Hopefully because of the release of the new GTX 470/480, you may be able to pick up other higher end cards on the cheap as retailers try to get rid of them. Keep your eyes peeled =)
20) Questions and Answers : Windows : Results (Message 993725)
Posted 3 May 2010 by Profile Hammeh
Post:
It is just because each task has to be completed twice, once by you, and once by another person before it can be validated. Certain people have large caches of work units, and therefore, it takes them a long time to complete them and upload the results. This is what causes the huge amounts of pending credit.

Also don't forget that validated work units will be removed from your task list after a short period of time!! Therefore you probably have many many more validated work units than you are aware off.
